Learn About CVS Drug Testing Services

What CVS Drug Testing Services Offer

CVS Health operates one of the largest pharmacy networks in the United States, with over 9,600 locations across the country. Beyond filling prescriptions, many CVS stores provide drug testing services through their in-store clinics and dedicated testing centers. These services are available to individuals, employers, and organizations that need screening for substances in their systems.

CVS drug testing services typically include urine drug screening, which is the most common type of workplace drug test. The urine test can detect traces of various substances including marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and other drugs. Some locations also offer hair follicle testing, which can show substance use over a longer period—sometimes up to 90 days—compared to urine tests that typically detect use within 2-3 days.

The services are designed to meet different needs. Employers use these tests for pre-employment screening, random workplace testing, and reasonable-cause testing when they suspect an employee may be impaired. Individuals may use the services for personal reasons, court-ordered testing, or as part of legal proceedings. Healthcare providers sometimes refer patients to CVS testing as part of pain management or addiction treatment monitoring.

CVS operates under strict regulatory guidelines. All testing is conducted by trained personnel following procedures set by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This means samples are handled with documented chain of custody procedures, and results maintain privacy standards required by federal law. Most CVS locations that offer drug testing are certified to conduct Department of Transportation (DOT) tests, which are required for commercial drivers and transportation safety positions.

Practical takeaway: CVS drug testing is widely available because the pharmacy chain has physical locations in most communities. Before visiting your local CVS, call ahead to confirm they offer drug testing services, as not all locations provide this service. Ask about their hours, pricing, and whether you need an appointment or can walk in.

Types of Drug Tests Available at CVS

CVS offers several different types of drug testing, each suited to different situations and providing different timeframes for detection. Understanding the differences helps individuals and employers choose the right test for their needs.

Urine drug screening is the most commonly used test at CVS locations. This non-invasive test involves providing a sample that is tested for the presence of drug metabolites—the byproducts your body creates when processing drugs. Urine tests typically detect substance use from the past 2 to 4 days, though this timeframe varies depending on the substance. Marijuana can sometimes be detected for longer periods, occasionally up to 30 days in regular users, because it stays in fatty tissues. Urine tests are relatively inexpensive, costing between $25 and $75 depending on the substances being screened for and whether it's a basic panel or an extended panel that checks for more drugs.

Hair follicle testing is another option available at select CVS locations. This test involves collecting a small sample of hair from the scalp. Hair testing can detect drug use going back approximately 90 days, making it useful for detecting patterns of use rather than just recent consumption. Because of the longer detection window, hair tests are sometimes preferred by employers and courts, though they cost more—typically between $100 and $200 per test. It's important to note that hair testing cannot detect use from the last 5 to 7 days because it takes time for drugs to reach the hair shaft after use.

Department of Transportation (DOT) tests are specialized federal drug screening required for commercial drivers, pilots, railroad workers, and certain other transportation safety positions. These tests follow strict federal regulations and must be conducted at certified facilities. CVS locations that are DOT-certified use standardized procedures and report results directly to the employer's designated medical review officer. A DOT test typically checks for five drug categories: marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and phencyclidine (PCP). The cost for DOT tests is generally between $40 and $75.

Non-DOT tests are standard drug screening tests used by employers and individuals who don't fall under federal transportation requirements. These tests have more flexibility in what substances they screen for and how results are reported. Employers can customize panels to test for specific substances relevant to their workplace, and results go directly to the employer rather than through a medical review officer. Costs for non-DOT tests typically range from $25 to $50.

Practical takeaway: Before scheduling a test, clarify which type you need. If your employer is requiring the test, ask whether it's a DOT test or a standard drug screening. If you're arranging a test for personal reasons, a basic urine test usually provides what's needed. Contact your local CVS to confirm which testing types they offer, since not all locations have hair testing or DOT certification.

How to Schedule a Drug Test at CVS

Scheduling a drug test at CVS is a straightforward process, though the exact steps vary depending on your location and the type of test you need. Most CVS stores with testing services allow both scheduled appointments and walk-in testing, though scheduling ahead often means shorter wait times.

To find a CVS location near you that offers drug testing, start by visiting the CVS website and using their store locator tool. You can search by entering your zip code or address. Once you have a list of nearby locations, you'll need to contact the stores directly by phone to confirm they offer drug testing services. Not all CVS locations have on-site testing facilities—some stores may refer you to a nearby location that does. When you call, ask about their hours, whether appointments are required or if walk-ins are accepted, and how long results typically take.

For employer-ordered tests, your employer usually provides specific instructions about which CVS location to visit and what type of test is required. Many employers have accounts with CVS or use third-party occupational health providers that partner with CVS locations. In these cases, you may be given a specific time window to complete testing and an authorization code or reference number. Bring this documentation along with a valid photo ID when you arrive.

When scheduling, have the following information ready: the type of test needed (DOT or non-DOT), the substances to be screened for, whether the test is for employment, legal, or personal reasons, and any deadline you need to meet. For employer-ordered tests, provide your company name, position, and any account or reference information your employer gave you. If you're unsure about any details, the CVS staff can answer general questions, though they won't have access to your employer's specific testing requirements.

On the day of your test, arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to allow time for check-in and verification. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID—a driver's license or passport works well. You should avoid eating or drinking anything except water for about 30 minutes before the test, as this can affect sample quality. If you're taking any medications or supplements, you don't need to stop taking them before the test, but do mention them to the testing staff, as some medications can produce false positives on initial screens.

Practical takeaway: Call ahead to your nearest CVS to confirm they offer testing services before making a trip. If you're scheduling an employer-ordered test, get all the details from your employer first—the test type, deadline, and any specific CVS location your company requires. This prevents confusion and ensures you complete the test correctly.

When you arrive at CVS for your test, you'll first check in at the clinic counter and verify your identity with your photo ID. The staff will confirm your name, date of birth, and the type of test you're having performed. For employer-ordered tests, they'll verify your information against their records. This verification process is crucial because it ensures the results belong to the correct person and will be valid in legal or employment contexts. You'll be asked to sign consent forms and acknowledgment that you understand the testing procedures.

For a urine drug test, you'll be taken to a private bathroom or collection area. The testing staff will provide instructions on how to provide an adequate sample—typically at least 30 to 45 milliliters. For standardized DOT tests and many employer tests, there are specific procedures to follow: you may be asked to empty your pockets, wash your hands, and the staff may need to observe sample collection to prevent tampering. For non-DOT personal tests, the process is typically
