Pay Your Intermountain Gas Bill Guide

Understanding Intermountain Gas Company and Your Account

Intermountain Gas Company serves customers across Idaho and eastern Oregon, providing natural gas to residential, commercial, and industrial users. The company operates as a regulated utility, meaning the Idaho Public Utilities Commission oversees rates and service standards. Understanding how your gas account works is the first step toward managing your bill effectively.

When you receive service from Intermountain Gas, your account includes several key components. The account number appears on your bill and serves as your unique identifier within the system. Your service address is where gas is delivered through underground or overhead lines. The billing period typically runs for about 30 days, though some months may have slightly longer or shorter cycles depending on meter reading schedules. Intermountain Gas reads meters for most customers monthly, though some areas may have different schedules.

Your bill includes charges for the natural gas you consume, measured in therms (a unit of heat energy). Beyond the commodity charge for gas itself, your bill reflects distribution charges, which cover the cost of maintaining pipes and infrastructure in your area. Regulatory charges also appear on bills, as these support the oversight and regulatory functions of state agencies. Taxes may apply depending on your location and service type.

The company offers different rate schedules for different customer types. Residential customers typically fall under one rate category, while small business or large commercial customers may have different pricing structures. Understanding which rate schedule applies to your account helps you interpret your bill more clearly. You can find this information printed on your monthly statement or by contacting the company directly.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your account number on a recent bill and verify your service address and rate schedule. This information is essential for any questions or payment arrangements you may need to discuss with Intermountain Gas.

Payment Methods and Procedures

Intermountain Gas offers multiple ways to pay your bill, providing flexibility to match your preferences and circumstances. The company accepts payments through several channels, each with specific procedures and timing considerations. Understanding these options helps you choose the method that works best for your situation and avoid late payments.

Online payment through the Intermountain Gas website represents one of the most convenient options for many customers. To pay online, you can create or access your account on the company's website, select the amount you wish to pay, and complete the transaction using a bank account or debit card. Online payments typically process within one business day, though the company recommends submitting payments several days before the due date to account for processing time. No fees apply for online payments made from a bank account, though card payments may incur a small processing fee.

Phone payments allow you to speak with a representative or use an automated system to pay your bill over the telephone. You can call Intermountain Gas's customer service line and provide payment information directly to an agent. Automated phone payment systems are also available, allowing you to enter your payment details without speaking to anyone. Phone payments require you to have your account number and payment method ready. The company processes phone payments the same business day if you call before the cutoff time, typically in the afternoon.

Mailing a check or money order remains a traditional option that many customers use. To pay by mail, write your account number on the check and send it to the address listed on your bill. Mail typically takes several days to reach Intermountain Gas, so send payments at least a week before your due date to ensure on-time receipt. The company cannot guarantee receipt of mail payments, so consider using certified mail if timing is tight.

Automatic bank draft (also called automatic payment or ACH) arranges for the company to withdraw your payment directly from your bank account on a scheduled date. This method prevents missed payments and requires no action from you each month. To set up automatic payments, contact customer service or manage the arrangement through your online account. You can change the payment amount or cancel automatic payments at any time with appropriate notice.

In-person payments at authorized payment locations or company offices provide another option. Some Intermountain Gas payment centers accept cash, checks, and card payments during business hours. Availability varies by location, so contact the company to find nearby payment centers.

Practical Takeaway: Choose one or two payment methods that fit your routine, then set a reminder three days before your due date to ensure timely payment. Online or automatic payment methods reduce the risk of late fees and service disconnection.

Reading and Understanding Your Bill

Your monthly Intermountain Gas bill contains several sections of information that, when understood together, explain exactly what you owe and why. Learning to read your bill helps you spot errors, understand price changes, and identify opportunities to use gas more efficiently. Bills may look complex at first glance, but each section serves a specific purpose.

The account summary section at the top of your bill shows your account number, service address, billing period dates, and due date. This area also displays your current balance and the amount due. The due date typically falls 15 to 20 days after the bill is issued. Paying by this date avoids late fees and service disconnection risks. Many bills also show your previous balance and any payments received since the last bill.

The usage section details how much natural gas you consumed during the billing period, measured in therms. This section typically includes your current meter reading and your previous meter reading, with the difference representing your consumption. A comparison to your usage from the same month in the previous year often appears here, helping you see whether your consumption increased or decreased. For customers with automatic meter reading technology, the company displays the daily average consumption, allowing you to see how your usage varied throughout the month.

The charges section breaks down what you owe by category. The gas commodity charge reflects the cost of the natural gas itself, calculated by multiplying your therm usage by the per-therm rate. Distribution charges cover the expense of maintaining the gas system in your area and typically represent a significant portion of your bill. Customer service charges are flat fees that appear on every bill. Regulatory charges support state oversight functions and may vary slightly month to month. Sales tax and any local taxes appear as separate line items. Some bills also display delivery charges or customer facility charges depending on your location and service type.

Many bills include a usage graph or chart showing your consumption over the past year or past several months. This visual representation makes it easy to spot seasonal patterns. Most customers use significantly more gas during winter months when heating needs are greatest. Summer usage typically drops substantially unless you use gas for cooking or water heating exclusively.

The back of your bill or a separate section often includes information about budget billing, payment methods, contact information, and notices about rate changes or service issues. This area may also display messages about energy conservation or account alerts if you have automatic payment set up.

Practical Takeaway: Spend time reviewing one bill completely, marking which sections show your usage and which show your charges. Compare this bill to your previous one to see how your usage and total amount due changed, then use this pattern to anticipate future bills.

Budget Billing and Payment Plans

Intermountain Gas offers a budget billing program that smooths out monthly bill fluctuations, spreading your annual gas costs evenly across all 12 months. This option helps customers with predictable household budgets and reduces the shock of high winter heating bills. Understanding how budget billing works and who might benefit from it can help you decide whether this option suits your needs.

Budget billing calculates an average monthly payment based on your projected annual gas use. The company analyzes your historical usage patterns, typically looking back 12 months, then divides the estimated annual cost by 12 to determine your monthly budget billing amount. During the heating season (typically October through March), your actual consumption may exceed your budget billing amount, but you don't pay the difference immediately. During warmer months, your actual usage typically falls below the budget amount. At the end of the budget year, usually in October, the company adjusts your budget based on your actual usage over the past year. If you used less gas than the budget billed, you receive a credit toward future bills. If you used more, you may owe an additional payment or your budget increases for the next year.

Budget billing works well for customers who prefer payment consistency and find it easier to budget when bills stay roughly the same each month. It's particularly valuable for people on fixed incomes or households that want to avoid large winter bills. However, budget billing requires committing to the program for at least a full year, and your usage must be relatively stable for the system to work effectively. Customers whose usage changes significantly—such as those who move, add electric heating, or change their heating system—may want to wait until their usage stabilizes before enrolling.
