Your Guide to Paying Your Piedmont Gas Bill

Understanding Your Piedmont Gas Bill

Your Piedmont Gas bill is a monthly statement that shows how much natural gas you used during the billing period and how much you owe. The bill typically arrives 10 to 15 days after your meter is read. Understanding the different parts of your bill helps you track your usage and identify any unusual charges.

The main section of your bill displays your current charges, which include the cost of gas you consumed plus various fees. The gas charge is based on the number of therms used—a therm is a standard measurement of gas equal to 100,000 British thermal units (BTUs). If you used 50 therms in a month and the rate is $1.20 per therm, your gas charge would be $60 before taxes and other fees are added.

Beyond the gas consumption charge, your bill includes several other line items. These typically feature a customer charge (a fixed fee for service availability), distribution charges (costs to deliver gas through pipes), and various taxes. Some bills also show adjustments for factors like weather normalization or utility company regulatory changes. The total due is the sum of all these components.

Your bill also displays your account number, service address, meter number, and billing period dates. The meter number is important if you ever need to report problems or contact customer service. Many bills show a comparison of your current usage to the same month last year, which can help you spot trends. For example, if your March bill shows 45 therms this year compared to 38 therms last March, you might explore why usage increased—perhaps due to colder weather or a heating system issue.

Practical Takeaway: Review the usage section of your bill each month. Look for the therms used and compare it to previous months. A sudden spike in usage might indicate a leak or appliance malfunction that needs attention. This monthly review takes just a few minutes but can save you money by catching problems early.

Payment Methods and Due Dates

Piedmont Gas offers several ways to pay your bill, each with different timelines and convenience levels. Understanding your options helps you choose the method that works best for your situation and ensure your payment arrives on time.

Online payment through the Piedmont Gas website is one of the fastest options. You can log into your account and pay immediately using a bank account or debit card. This method typically processes within one to two business days. The website is accessible 24/7, so you can pay at any time that suits your schedule. Online payment is also paperless, which reduces clutter and provides a digital record of your transaction. When you pay online, the system usually confirms your payment immediately and sends you an email receipt.

Automatic payment (autopay) is another convenient option where Piedmont Gas withdraws your bill amount directly from your bank account on a set date each month. This eliminates the need to remember to pay manually. Most customers set autopay for 3 to 5 days after their bill date to ensure the bill is processed before the withdrawal. Autopay reduces the risk of late payments, which can result in service interruption or late fees. You can change or cancel autopay anytime through your online account or by calling customer service.

Phone payment allows you to pay by speaking with a representative. Call Piedmont Gas's customer service line with your bill information and payment method ready. This method works during business hours and may take 1 to 2 business days to process. Phone payments are useful if you have questions about your bill or need assistance, but they do require speaking with someone directly.

Mail payment is the traditional method. Write a check or money order, include it with your bill's payment stub, and mail it to the address shown on your statement. Mail payments typically take 5 to 7 business days to process after being received. To avoid late fees, mail your payment at least one week before the due date. Your due date appears on your bill—typically 18 to 23 days after the bill date. Paying by mail creates a paper trail through your cancelled check, which some people prefer for record-keeping.

In-person payment at Piedmont Gas customer service offices is available in some areas. You can pay with cash, check, or debit card. This method gives you a same-day receipt and confirms your payment immediately. Call to find the nearest office location and hours before visiting.

Practical Takeaway: Choose the payment method that best matches your habits. If you tend to forget bills, set up autopay. If you prefer control over timing, use online payment. If you want a physical record, pay by mail or in person. Regardless of method, aim to pay 5 to 7 days before your due date to avoid late fees.

Reading and Interpreting Usage Charges

Your usage charge is the largest part of your bill, and understanding how it's calculated helps you identify opportunities to save money. Piedmont Gas charges based on therms consumed, and the rate can vary depending on your location and rate schedule.

A therm is the unit of measurement for natural gas consumption. One therm equals 100,000 BTUs. Most households use between 30 and 100 therms per month, depending on the season and home size. In winter, usage increases because heating accounts for the largest portion of residential gas use—heating can represent 40 to 60% of a home's total energy use. In summer, gas usage drops significantly unless you use gas for water heating or cooking. For example, a home using 70 therms in January might use only 15 therms in July.

Piedmont Gas may use tiered pricing, meaning the rate per therm changes based on how much you use. You might pay one price for the first 20 therms and a different (usually higher) price for therms beyond that. This structure encourages conservation because the marginal cost increases with higher usage. On a tiered rate bill, you'll see separate line items showing usage in each tier and the corresponding charge.

Some Piedmont Gas service areas offer time-of-use rates, where the price per therm varies by time of day or season. Peak times (usually late afternoon and evening during winter) have higher rates, while off-peak times have lower rates. If your area has time-of-use rates, your bill shows usage broken down by time period. Understanding these periods helps you shift usage when possible—for instance, you might adjust your thermostat slightly during peak hours and compensate during off-peak times.

Your bill shows the meter reading from the start and end of your billing period. The difference between these readings is your usage. For example, if your meter read 5,200 therms on March 1 and 5,265 therms on April 1, you used 65 therms that month. Piedmont Gas typically reads meters monthly, though some areas have moved to automated meter reading. If your usage seems unusually high, check whether the meter reading is estimated (marked with an "E" on the bill) or actual. Estimated readings sometimes differ from actual usage in the following month.

Practical Takeaway: Track your therm usage over 12 months by noting the number on each bill. Create a simple spreadsheet or chart showing month-by-month usage. This reveals patterns—such as January being your highest usage month—and helps you set realistic goals for energy conservation.

Understanding Fees, Taxes, and Additional Charges

Beyond your gas consumption charge, your Piedmont Gas bill includes several other fees and taxes. Learning what these are helps you understand the full cost of service and identify any unexpected charges.

The customer charge is a fixed monthly fee that covers the cost of maintaining your meter, billing, and customer service infrastructure. This charge typically ranges from $10 to $20 per month depending on your rate schedule and service area. The customer charge appears on every bill regardless of how much gas you use, even if you use zero therms in a month. This fee ensures the utility can maintain the system that delivers gas to your home.

Distribution charges cover the cost of maintaining the pipeline infrastructure that brings gas to your neighborhood. These charges are typically calculated as a per-therm rate and appear as a separate line item. Unlike the customer charge, distribution charges vary with your usage. If you use 50 therms, you pay distribution charges on 50 therms. If you use 30 therms, you pay distribution charges on 30 therms. Distribution charges usually make up 20 to 35% of your total bill.

Taxes appear at the bottom of your bill. Most
