Your Guide to New Hampshire's Updated Car Inspection Rules
Understanding New Hampshire's Vehicle Inspection System
New Hampshire requires all registered vehicles to pass an annual safety and emissions inspection. The state's inspection program focuses on ensuring that vehicles operating on public roads meet minimum safety and environmental standards. This guide provides information about how the inspection process works, what vehicles need inspection, and what to expect when taking your vehicle to an inspection station.

The New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of Motor Vehicles oversees the inspection program through a network of authorized inspection stations located throughout the state. These stations are privately operated businesses—gas stations, repair shops, and automotive service centers—that have been authorized to perform inspections on behalf of the state. The inspection process itself is standardized, meaning all stations follow the same requirements and procedures regardless of location.
New Hampshire's inspection system serves two main purposes. First, it checks that critical safety components of your vehicle function properly. These include brakes, steering, lights, tires, and windows. Second, for vehicles that produce emissions, the inspection verifies that pollution control equipment is working correctly. Vehicles that fail inspection cannot legally be driven on public roads until repairs are made and the vehicle passes a reinspection.
The inspection sticker, which displays the month and year of expiration, indicates that your vehicle met state requirements on the date of inspection. This sticker must be visible on your windshield. If your inspection sticker has expired or you are driving a vehicle that has never been inspected, law enforcement can issue a citation. Penalties for driving with an expired or missing inspection sticker can include fines.
Practical takeaway: Plan to have your vehicle inspected before your current sticker expires. Most inspection stations can complete the inspection in 15 to 30 minutes, though you may want to schedule an appointment to avoid waiting time.
What Gets Checked During a New Hampshire Inspection
During a New Hampshire vehicle inspection, a certified inspector examines multiple systems and components on your vehicle. Understanding what inspectors look for can help you know whether your vehicle is likely to pass or may need repairs beforehand. The inspection covers areas that directly affect safety and environmental performance.

Safety components make up the largest portion of the inspection checklist. Inspectors examine your braking system, including brake pads, rotors, and the overall condition of brake lines and connections. They test that all lights work, including headlights (both low and high beams), taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and interior dome lights. Windshield wipers and washer fluid systems are checked. Inspectors verify that all windows are intact and not excessively cracked or damaged in ways that obstruct vision. Steering components are examined to ensure the steering wheel moves smoothly without excessive play.
Tire and wheel components are inspected for safety. Inspectors check that tires have adequate tread depth and are not excessively worn. They look for signs of damage such as large cuts or bulges. Wheels must be properly attached, and lug nuts must be present and secure. Rims should not be bent or cracked in ways that pose safety risks. The spare tire and jack must be present in the vehicle.
Environmental systems are checked on vehicles equipped with emissions control equipment. Inspectors verify that the catalytic converter is present and intact, that oxygen sensors are functioning, and that the vehicle's computer systems for emissions control are operational. For vehicles with a check engine light illuminated, the inspection typically cannot be passed until the underlying issue is addressed.
Additional items checked include seat belts (all must be functional), the horn, mirrors (at least two must be present and in working condition), and the overall structural integrity of the vehicle. Any signs of rust or damage that could affect safety may be noted.
Practical takeaway: Before scheduling an inspection, do a quick walk-around check of your vehicle. Test your lights, brakes, wipers, and windshield washer. Check tire condition and ensure all windows are clean and uncracked. These simple checks may reveal issues that need repair before inspection day.
Types of Vehicles and Special Inspection Requirements
Not all vehicles are subject to the same inspection requirements in New Hampshire. The state has different rules depending on vehicle age, type, and use. Understanding which category your vehicle falls into can help you know what to expect from the inspection process and whether any special requirements apply.

Passenger vehicles registered in New Hampshire and driven on public roads must be inspected annually. This includes sedans, station wagons, hatchbacks, and similar vehicles regardless of age. Trucks and SUVs registered in the state also require annual inspection. Commercial vehicles used for business purposes have additional requirements beyond the standard inspection and may need special permits or endorsements.
Vehicles that are seven years old or newer may be subject to different emission testing requirements compared to older vehicles. Newer vehicles with advanced emissions control systems typically undergo computer-based diagnostic testing during inspection. Older vehicles may be tested differently based on their emissions equipment.
Fleet vehicles—multiple vehicles owned by a business or organization—can be inspected under a fleet program that may streamline the process. However, each vehicle still must pass the same safety and emissions standards as individual vehicles. Some businesses and government entities manage their vehicle inspections through fleet accounts with inspection stations.
Farm vehicles used primarily for agricultural purposes may have different registration and inspection requirements. Recreational vehicles, such as ATVs and snowmobiles, are registered separately and have their own inspection standards that differ from standard automobiles. Classic or antique vehicles that are not driven regularly may have special provisions, though owners should verify the current rules for their specific situation.
Vehicles that are being registered in New Hampshire for the first time must pass inspection before or shortly after registration. New residents bringing vehicles to the state should plan to have an inspection completed as part of the registration process.
Practical takeaway: Check your vehicle's registration documents or contact your local DMV to confirm which inspection requirements apply to your specific vehicle. If you own multiple vehicles or operate a fleet, ask about whether fleet inspection programs might be available to you.
The Inspection Process and What to Expect
Knowing what happens during an inspection visit can reduce confusion and help you prepare. The inspection process at authorized New Hampshire stations follows a consistent format, though individual stations may have slightly different workflows based on their facilities and equipment.

When you arrive at an inspection station, you will need to provide your vehicle keys and your vehicle's registration. The inspector will verify that the vehicle information matches your registration documents. You will typically wait in a waiting area while the inspector performs the checks. Some stations may have a waiting room with seating; others may ask you to wait outside or return to pick up your vehicle at a certain time.
The inspector will conduct a series of checks both inside and outside the vehicle. They may ask you to sit in the driver's seat to test lights, wipers, and other controls. The vehicle will be raised on a lift so the inspector can examine the undercarriage, including the brake system, exhaust system, and suspension. For emissions testing, the inspector may connect a diagnostic scanner to your vehicle's computer system to read emissions data.
The inspection typically takes between 15 and 45 minutes depending on the vehicle's age, condition, and the station's current workload. At the end, the inspector will provide you with results. If your vehicle passes, you will receive an inspection sticker that displays the month and year of expiration. If your vehicle fails, you will receive a detailed report explaining which items did not pass inspection.
Fees for inspection in New Hampshire are set by the state and are the same at all stations. As of recent years, the standard inspection fee is $23.50 for passenger vehicles. Some stations may charge an additional diagnostic fee if they need to use specialized equipment to troubleshoot issues, though this varies. You should ask about the total cost before the inspection begins.
If your vehicle fails inspection, you will need to have the failed items repaired and then return for a reinspection. The reinspection fee is typically lower than the initial inspection fee. Some stations offer repair services and can fix issues on-site, while others only perform inspections and refer you to other repair shops.
Practical takeaway: Call ahead to schedule an appointment at a station near you. Bring your registration documents and vehicle keys. Ask about wait times and whether the station can perform repairs if your vehicle fails, in case you want to address issues immediately.
When Your Vehicle Fails Inspection and What to Do
If your vehicle fails inspection, it is not a permanent situation. The failure
