Understanding Motorcycle Helmet Sizing Basics

A properly sized motorcycle helmet is one of the most important safety investments you can make. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 69% and death by 42% for motorcycle operators. However, these statistics only apply when a helmet fits correctly. A helmet that is too loose will shift during an accident, and a helmet that is too tight can cause discomfort that leads riders to skip wearing it altogether.

Helmet sizing starts with understanding that head measurements vary significantly from person to person. Two people who wear the same clothing size may need completely different helmet sizes. The fit of a helmet depends on the actual circumference of your head, the shape of your head (which can be oval, intermediate, or round), and personal comfort preferences. Manufacturers design helmets with different internal shapes to accommodate these natural variations in head geometry.

Most helmet manufacturers use a standardized sizing chart based on head circumference measured in centimeters or inches. Common sizes range from XS (extra small) through XXL (extra extra large), though some brands offer additional sizing options. The relationship between head size and helmet size is straightforward: measure your head, find that measurement on the manufacturer's chart, and select the corresponding size.

It's important to know that helmet sizing is not standardized across all manufacturers. A size medium from one brand may fit differently than a size medium from another brand. This is because different manufacturers design their helmets with varying internal dimensions and padding thicknesses. Some brands cater to riders with rounder head shapes, while others are designed for more oval-shaped heads. Understanding this variation helps explain why trying on multiple helmets is a practical step in finding the right fit.

Practical Takeaway: Before shopping for a helmet, you need to know your actual head circumference in both inches and centimeters. This single measurement is your starting point for finding a helmet that will protect you effectively.

How to Measure Your Head for Helmet Sizing

Measuring your head correctly is a straightforward process that takes about two minutes and requires only a soft measuring tape (the kind used for sewing, not a rigid metal tape measure). The accuracy of this measurement directly affects whether you'll end up with a helmet that fits properly, so taking time to measure carefully matters.

To measure your head, start by placing the measuring tape around your forehead, approximately one inch above your eyebrows. The tape should sit horizontally and parallel to the ground. Make sure the tape passes around the widest part of your head, which is typically around the middle of your forehead and around the back of your head at the occipital bone (the rounded part at the base of your skull). The tape should be snug enough that it doesn't slip but loose enough that you can fit one finger underneath it comfortably. Write down this measurement in both inches and centimeters.

For the most accurate result, measure your head three times and average the measurements together. Many people find that their measurements vary slightly depending on how tightly they position the tape. Taking multiple measurements and averaging them reduces the chance of error. It's also helpful to measure your head at different times of day, as head size can fluctuate slightly due to factors like hydration and temperature. If you notice significant variation in your measurements, use the larger number to ensure your helmet won't be too tight.

Some riders prefer to measure their head when it's slightly cool, as people's heads can swell in hot conditions. Similarly, if you typically wear a motorcycle helmet in cold weather, measuring your head in similar conditions can be helpful. If you plan to wear a head wrap, do-rag, or balaclava under your helmet during winter riding, measure your head with those items on. This ensures your helmet will fit comfortably over the layers you plan to wear.

Keep your measurements written down or saved in your phone. When you visit a motorcycle shop or browse online retailers, having these numbers readily available makes the selection process faster. Some riders even laminate a small card with their measurements to keep in their jacket pocket for reference when shopping.

Practical Takeaway: Measure your head three times using a soft measuring tape positioned one inch above your eyebrows, going around the widest part of your head. Average your measurements and keep these numbers on hand whenever you're shopping for a helmet.

Determining Your Head Shape and Finding Matching Helmets

Beyond circumference, helmet fit depends heavily on head shape. Helmets are manufactured with three primary internal shapes designed to match different head geometries: round, intermediate oval, and elongated oval. If you select the right circumference but wrong shape, your helmet will be uncomfortable and may not stay in place during riding. Understanding your head shape is therefore as important as knowing your measurement.

To determine your head shape, there are several approaches. The simplest method is to compare your head's appearance to these descriptions: A round head appears roughly circular when viewed from above. An intermediate oval head is slightly wider side-to-side than front-to-back, like a typical oval. An elongated oval head is noticeably longer front-to-back than it is wide side-to-side. Many people fall into the intermediate category, which is why most manufacturers produce more helmets designed for intermediate oval heads than other shapes.

Another way to determine head shape is to press your head gently into a pillow or soft surface and observe the impression. A perfectly round impression suggests a round head. An oval impression that's slightly wider than it is long suggests intermediate oval. A noticeably longer oval impression suggests an elongated oval head. While this method isn't perfectly scientific, it can provide helpful confirmation of what you observe when looking at your head shape from different angles.

Once you know your head shape and circumference, you can narrow down which helmets will likely fit you well. Most manufacturers include head shape information in their sizing charts. When browsing helmets online or in a shop, look for product descriptions that mention the intended head shape. For example, a product description might state "designed for intermediate oval heads" or "suitable for round to oval head shapes." Paying attention to this detail saves time and reduces the number of helmets you need to try on.

It's worth noting that head shape can influence comfort as much as safety. A helmet that's the correct circumference but wrong shape may pinch at the temples or feel loose across the cheeks. While it might stay on your head, the pressure points created by an incorrect shape can cause headaches during longer rides. This is why trying on helmets in person, when possible, remains valuable even when you know your exact measurements.

Practical Takeaway: Determine whether your head is round, intermediate oval, or elongated oval by examining your head shape and comparing it to these categories. When selecting a helmet, prioritize matching both your circumference and your head shape for optimal comfort and protection.

The Fit Test: What to Check When Trying On a Helmet

Putting on a helmet correctly is a skill that ensures you're testing fit accurately. When you first position a helmet on your head, grip it on both sides and pull it down firmly. A properly sized helmet should slide over your head with moderate resistance, not effortlessly. If the helmet slides on without any resistance, it's likely too large. Once the helmet is fully on your head, the front of the helmet should sit about one or two finger-widths above your eyebrows. This positioning ensures the face shield or visor operates properly and that the protective shell covers the appropriate portion of your head.

With the helmet properly positioned, perform several fit tests to assess whether it's the right size. First, grasp the helmet at the sides near the temples and try to move it side to side. A well-fitting helmet should move slightly with your head but should not slide excessively from side to side. If you can move the helmet more than a quarter inch in either direction, it's too large. Second, gently pull up on the back of the helmet at the rear of the shell. The helmet should stay in place or move only slightly. If the helmet rotates forward significantly or moves several inches, it's too large.

Next, assess pressure points. The helmet should apply fairly even pressure around your head. Some slight pressure around the cheeks and temples is normal and expected. However, you should never experience sharp pinching sensations or concentrated pressure in any one area. If you feel targeted pressure points after wearing the helmet for a few minutes, the size or shape may not be correct for your head. Keep in mind that new helmet padding will compress somewhat over the first 10-20 hours of wear, so a helmet that feels slightly snug is often appropriate
