Stop Invasive Species Damaging Your Property

Understanding Invasive Species and Property Damage

Invasive species are plants, animals, and insects that arrive in an area where they don't naturally belong and cause harm to the environment, economy, or property. Unlike native species that have adapted to local conditions over centuries, invasive species often lack natural predators and compete aggressively for resources. This guide provides information about recognizing invasive species on your property and understanding how they damage structures, landscapes, and ecosystems.

The damage caused by invasive species can range from cosmetic to structural. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that invasive species cost the United States approximately $120 billion annually in economic losses. On residential and commercial properties, this translates into expensive repairs, reduced property values, and ongoing maintenance challenges. For example, termites—particularly the Formosan subterranean termite, an invasive species in many U.S. states—cause an estimated $5 billion in damage each year across the country. Similarly, invasive plants like kudzu can overtake entire properties, while invasive insects like the emerald ash borer have killed hundreds of millions of ash trees.

Understanding which invasive species are present in your region is the first step in protecting your property. Different areas face different threats based on climate, geography, and existing ecosystems. A property owner in Florida may encounter invasive Burmese pythons and Brazilian pepper plants, while someone in the Pacific Northwest might deal with Japanese knotweed or European fire ants. Contact your local cooperative extension office or state natural resources department to learn which invasive species are established or emerging in your area.

Practical takeaway: Document the plants and animals on your property by taking photos and comparing them to regional invasive species lists published by your state's department of agriculture or natural resources. Keep this documentation in case you need to report invasive species to local authorities or for insurance claims.

Invasive Plants That Damage Property Structures and Landscapes

Invasive plants cause property damage through multiple mechanisms: they crack foundations and pavement with aggressive root systems, damage building exteriors, clog drainage systems, and reduce property aesthetic value. Several invasive plants pose particular threats to residential and commercial properties across North America. Kudzu, native to Asia, covers approximately 7.4 million acres in the southeastern United States. Its fast-growing vines can completely overtake structures, killing trees and damaging roofing, siding, and utility lines. A single kudzu plant can grow up to one foot per day during peak growing season, making it exceptionally difficult to control once established.

Japanese knotweed presents similar structural threats in cooler climates. Its rhizomes (underground stems) are extraordinarily aggressive and can penetrate concrete, asphalt, and building foundations. The plant can re-grow from even small fragments of root material, making removal extremely challenging. Property owners in the northeastern United States and parts of the Pacific Northwest report foundation cracks, basement water damage, and expensive excavation costs related to Japanese knotweed infestations. In some cases, infestations have significantly reduced property resale value or made properties temporarily unmarketable.

Multiflora rose, native to Asia and established throughout much of the United States, creates dense thorny thickets that consume large areas of property. While it doesn't cause structural damage like some invasive plants, it reduces usable land, harbors rodent populations, and becomes nearly impossible to remove once established. The plant produces seeds that persist in soil for up to 20 years, meaning removal efforts must continue for years to prevent regrowth. English ivy and other climbing vines damage wooden siding, brick, and mortar by holding moisture against surfaces and creating conditions for rot and decay. They also obscure visual inspection of building damage, allowing problems to worsen before detection.

Practical takeaway: Before planting ornamental vines or vegetation near structures, verify with your local cooperative extension that the species is not invasive in your region. For existing invasive plants, photograph them and document the damage they cause (foundation cracks, structural staining, overgrowth) for future reference. Do not attempt removal without understanding the species' reproduction and persistence methods.

Invasive Insects and Pests Threatening Structures

Invasive insect species cause billions of dollars in property damage annually through structural destruction, tree loss, and agricultural damage. The Formosan subterranean termite, native to Asia and established in southern and coastal U.S. states, causes damage at rates 10 times faster than native termite species. A mature Formosan termite colony can contain up to 5 million individuals compared to 60,000-100,000 in native species colonies. These termites consume wood, insulation, and other structural materials, and they work 24 hours per day. Properties in affected regions may experience $20,000-$30,000 in damage before infestation is discovered, as Formosan termites tunnel silently within structures.

The emerald ash borer (EAB), accidentally introduced from Asia in 2002, has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees across North America. While the EAB doesn't directly damage structures, ash tree death creates significant property hazards. Dead ash trees become brittle and prone to sudden branch or whole-tree failure, posing risks to nearby buildings, vehicles, and people. Property owners must pay for removal of dead trees (often $500-$2,000 per tree) or face liability if a falling tree damages neighboring properties. Communities with high ash tree populations face enormous costs in removal and replanting.

Other invasive insects damaging property include the Asian longhorned beetle (affecting hardwood trees), the gypsy moth (defoliating vast forest areas), and various invasive wasp species. The Japanese beetle damages ornamental plants and lawns, while invasive fire ants establish colonies in lawns and landscaping. Fire ant stings send approximately 16,000 people to emergency rooms annually, and their mound-building damages lawn uniformity and creates safety hazards. In agricultural and residential settings, invasive beetles bore into wooden structures, fences, and landscape timbers, creating galleries that weaken structural integrity over time.

Practical takeaway: Schedule professional pest inspections for any property in regions where invasive termites, beetles, or other wood-boring insects are established. Early detection prevents catastrophic damage. Learn to identify trees on your property that may be infested with emerald ash borers or other invasive insects, and consult with a certified arborist about removal or treatment options before failure occurs.

Aquatic and Ground-Based Invasive Species

Properties adjacent to water features face distinct invasive species threats. Aquatic invasive species like zebra mussels clog water intake pipes and damage dock structures through their attachment and accumulation. Properties dependent on well water or with irrigation systems drawing from surface water may experience pump failure or reduced water flow due to zebra mussel colonization. Removal and replacement of affected pipes and equipment can cost thousands of dollars. Asian carp, established in several U.S. waterways, compete with native fish species and disrupt aquatic ecosystems, affecting recreational property values and fishing-related economic activity.

Water hyacinth and hydrilla are aquatic plants that form dense mats on pond and lake surfaces. These invasive plants impede water flow in irrigation systems, reduce recreational access to water, and create habitat for disease-carrying mosquitoes. Property owners with ponds or water features may find these plants difficult and expensive to remove, and regrowth occurs repeatedly without ongoing management. Even small water features like decorative ponds become completely overgrown within a single growing season if infested.

On land, invasive earthworms are changing soil structure in forested properties. Asian jumping worms (Amynthas species) increase soil disturbance and nutrient cycling rates, altering forest composition and causing leaf litter depletion. These changes affect tree health and stability, potentially creating hazard trees. In landscaped properties, these worms can damage ornamental plantings by increasing soil compaction and nutrient loss. Invasive ant species like fire ants and Argentine ants create structural concerns through mound building and colony establishment within building materials. Argentine ant colonies can span entire neighborhoods, with super-colonies extending for miles, and they drive out native ant species that provide pest control benefits.

Practical takeaway: If your property includes a pond, water feature, or irrigation system, inspect intake points and screens regularly for debris and invasive species accumulation. Learn to identify invasive aquatic plants and report sightings to your state environmental agency. For properties near infested waterways, consult with water quality professionals about protecting wells and intake systems from invasive species colonization.
