Learn How to Record Audio and Video on Your PC
Understanding Audio and Video Recording Basics on Windows and Mac
Recording audio and video on your personal computer involves capturing sound and visual information using built-in tools or third-party software. Most modern computers come equipped with microphones and webcams, making it possible to start recording without purchasing additional hardware. Windows PCs and Mac computers both offer native recording capabilities, though the specific tools and methods differ between operating systems.

Before beginning any recording project, understanding the fundamental concepts helps you make informed choices about which method suits your needs. Audio recording captures sound waves and converts them into digital files that can be stored and edited. Video recording captures a series of still images at a rapid speed—typically 24 to 60 frames per second—creating the illusion of motion when played back. The quality of your recordings depends on several factors including microphone and camera specifications, lighting conditions, room acoustics, and the software you choose to use.
Different recording scenarios require different approaches. Recording a podcast involves primarily audio capture with minimal video needs. Recording a tutorial or presentation typically requires both audio and screen video. Recording a video call or interview may use your computer's webcam. Understanding your specific recording goal helps determine which tools and settings will work best for your situation.
Most computers have sufficient processing power to handle real-time recording. A modern laptop or desktop from the past five years can typically record high-definition video without significant performance issues. However, recording while running multiple other applications or performing processor-intensive tasks may cause lag, stuttering, or audio synchronization problems. Knowing your computer's capabilities helps prevent technical difficulties during recording.
Practical Takeaway: Identify what you want to record—audio only, video with audio, screen content, or webcam footage—and note your computer's specifications (processor, RAM, and available storage space). This information guides your software selection and recording settings.
Built-In Recording Tools on Windows Computers
Windows operating systems include several native recording tools that require no additional software installation. The most accessible option is the Voice Recorder application, available on Windows 10 and Windows 11. This dedicated audio recording program provides a straightforward interface with record, pause, and stop buttons. To locate it, search "Voice Recorder" in the Windows Start menu. The application saves recordings in M4A format, which maintains decent audio quality while keeping file sizes manageable.

For video recording on Windows, the Xbox Game Bar serves as a built-in screen and audio capture tool. Originally designed for gaming, this feature works equally well for recording educational content, software demonstrations, or webcam video. Press the Windows key and the letter G simultaneously to open the Game Bar. The recording toolbar includes options to record your entire screen, a specific application window, or your webcam. You can simultaneously record audio from your microphone and any system sounds playing on your computer. Recorded videos save in MP4 format, which is compatible with most video players and editing software.
Windows also includes the Photos app, which has a built-in screen recording feature introduced in recent versions. Open the Photos app, select "Create" from the menu, then choose "Screen recording." This tool captures video of your screen and microphone audio. It's particularly useful for creating quick tutorials or demonstrating how to perform tasks on your computer.
The Settings app in Windows contains sound recording options you should configure before recording. Navigate to Settings > System > Sound, then scroll down to find "Volume mixer" or "App volume and device preferences." Here you can see which applications are currently using your microphone and adjust input levels. You can also select which microphone input device to use if your computer has multiple microphones connected.
Practical Takeaway: Test the Xbox Game Bar or Voice Recorder with a short practice recording. Check your audio input settings and microphone levels in the Windows Sound settings before recording important content. Save your test recordings to verify they meet your quality standards.
Built-In Recording Tools on Mac Computers
Mac computers offer recording capabilities through their built-in applications, with no need to purchase or install external software. QuickTime Player, included on all Mac computers, provides both audio and video recording functions. Open QuickTime Player from the Applications folder, then go to File > New Audio Recording or File > New Screen Recording, depending on what you want to capture. For audio recording, a microphone icon appears on screen with record and stop buttons. For screen recording, you can choose to record your entire screen or select a specific portion of it, and you can simultaneously record audio from your microphone.

The Voice Memos application on Mac serves as a dedicated audio recording tool similar to Windows Voice Recorder. Search for Voice Memos using Spotlight (press Command and Spacebar), then click the red record button to begin. Voice Memos displays audio waveforms in real-time, allowing you to monitor your recording as it happens. The application automatically trims silence at the beginning and end of recordings, though you can disable this feature in the preferences if you need to preserve every second of audio.
Mac's System Preferences contains audio configuration options accessed through System Preferences > Sound. Select the "Input" tab to see available microphones and adjust microphone input levels. A slider shows your microphone's current sensitivity level, and you can test your input by speaking while watching the level indicator move. The "Output" tab lets you select which speaker or audio interface will output sound during recording playback and monitoring.
For screen recording on Mac, the built-in screenshot tool also captures video. Press Shift-Command-5 to open the screenshot interface, then select "Screen Recording" or "Portion Screen Recording." A floating toolbar allows you to record audio from your microphone, internal audio, or both. These recordings save directly to your desktop in MOV format, which is Mac's native video format but can be converted to MP4 for broader compatibility.
Practical Takeaway: Familiarize yourself with QuickTime Player's recording options by creating a short test recording. Check your microphone level in System Preferences, and practice selecting specific screen areas if you plan to record tutorials. Note that Mac records in MOV format by default, though you can convert files to other formats later using free online tools or video editing software.
Third-Party Software Options for Advanced Recording
While built-in tools cover basic recording needs, third-party software provides additional features like video editing, multi-track audio recording, and advanced effects. OBS Studio stands out as one of the most popular free recording applications for both Windows and Mac. This open-source software allows you to create custom recording layouts combining multiple video sources—your screen, webcam, images, and text—into a single recording. OBS lets you switch between different layouts during recording, making it ideal for streaming or creating professional-quality videos with multiple camera angles.

Audacity represents the leading free option for audio editing and recording. This software captures high-quality audio from your microphone or line input, displays waveforms showing exactly what you've recorded, and provides tools to edit recordings after capture. Audacity exports audio in multiple formats including MP3, WAV, and FLAC. The learning curve is steeper than built-in tools, but Audacity's capabilities justify the additional time investment for serious audio work.
Camtasia offers commercial screen recording and video editing in a single application. Unlike free alternatives, Camtasia provides pre-built templates, automatic editing features, and interactive elements like quizzes and buttons within videos. While it requires purchasing a license, the combined recording and editing functionality can reduce the total time spent on video projects. The software works on both Windows and Mac with identical interfaces and features.
Streamlabs Desktop and XSplit are designed primarily for live streaming but also record high-quality local files. These applications include built-in transitions, overlays, and scene management tools. If you plan to stream your recording to platforms like Twitch or YouTube while also saving a local copy, these tools streamline the process. Both offer free versions with core features and paid versions with additional capabilities.
Practical Takeaway: Download and install OBS Studio on your computer, create a simple scene with your webcam or screen, and record a 30-second test video. This exercise familiarizes you with professional recording software while remaining completely free, preparing you for more complex projects.
Optimizing Your Recording Environment and Settings
Recording quality depends heavily on your physical environment and equipment settings, not just software choices. Audio quality benefits tremendously from reducing background noise. Background noise comes from many sources: computer fans, air conditioning systems, traffic outside, keyboard typing, and breathing sounds. Recording in a smaller, enclosed space generally produces better results than recording in large open areas, as smaller
