Understanding Strawberry Varieties and Growing Seasons

Strawberries come in three main types, each with different growing patterns and harvest schedules. Understanding these varieties helps you choose what works best for your location and gardening style.

June-bearing strawberries produce one large crop in late spring or early summer, typically yielding berries for about three weeks. These plants flower in fall and winter, then produce fruit the following spring. Common June-bearing varieties include Jewel, Honeoye, and Earliglow. If you live in a cooler climate, June-bearing types often perform well because they need cold winter hours to develop properly.

Ever-bearing strawberries produce two to three smaller crops throughout the growing season—typically in spring, mid-summer, and fall. Varieties like Ozark Beauty and Fort Laramie fall into this category. These plants are useful if you want strawberries available over a longer period rather than all at once.

Day-neutral strawberries produce fruit continuously from spring through fall, regardless of day length. Albion, San Andreas, and Seascape are popular day-neutral varieties. These work particularly well in mild climates or in containers where you can control conditions.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, most home gardeners start with June-bearing varieties because they're reliable and produce abundant fruit in regions with distinct seasons. Consider your climate zone when selecting plants. USDA Hardiness Zones 3 through 10 can grow strawberries, though the specific varieties that perform best vary by zone.

Practical Takeaway: Before purchasing strawberry plants, determine your climate zone and decide whether you prefer one large harvest or multiple smaller crops throughout the season. This choice will guide which variety to plant.

Selecting the Right Growing Location and Soil Preparation

Strawberries require specific conditions to thrive. Choosing the right location and preparing soil properly sets the foundation for healthy plants and good fruit production.

Strawberries need at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. More sunlight generally produces sweeter berries with better flavor. Plants grown in partial shade still produce fruit, but yields typically decrease by 20 to 30 percent compared to sun-exposed plants. Choose a spot that receives morning sun, which helps dry dew and reduces disease risk.

Soil preparation is critical. Strawberries prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. You can test your soil using an inexpensive kit from a garden center or through your local Cooperative Extension office. Strawberries also need well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Poor drainage leads to root rot and fungal diseases. Before planting, mix three to four inches of compost or aged manure into the top eight inches of existing soil. This improves drainage while adding nutrients.

Strawberries are heavy feeders that quickly deplete soil nutrients. Adding compost improves soil structure and provides slow-release nutrients. If your soil is extremely poor or compacted, consider raised beds filled with quality soil mix. Raised beds offer additional benefits: easier harvesting, better drainage, and reduced contact with soil-borne diseases.

Avoid planting strawberries where tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, or peppers grew in the past two years. These crops share similar diseases that can persist in soil. Similarly, don't plant strawberries in low-lying areas where water pools during rain, as standing water causes root diseases.

Practical Takeaway: Test your soil pH and amend it with compost before planting. Select a location with six to eight hours of direct sun and ensure water drains well. These steps reduce disease problems and increase your chances of a productive harvest.

Planting Strawberries: Timing, Depth, and Spacing

Proper planting technique directly affects plant survival and long-term productivity. Strawberry plants are sensitive to planting depth—too shallow or too deep causes problems.

The best time to plant strawberries depends on your region. In cooler climates (Zones 3-6), plant in spring as soon as soil can be worked, typically March through May. This gives plants the growing season to establish roots before winter. In warmer climates (Zones 8-10), plant in fall or early winter so plants experience cool weather during establishment. Spring planting in warm areas often fails because plants struggle in heat before roots develop properly.

When planting, the crown—the point where roots meet the leafy top—must sit exactly at soil level. If buried too deep, the crown rots. If exposed too high, roots dry out and the plant weakens. Spread roots in a fan pattern in the planting hole, then fill soil around them, firming gently. Water immediately after planting to settle soil and eliminate air pockets.

Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart in rows or beds. Crowding reduces air circulation, increasing disease risk. For June-bearing varieties in rows, space rows 36 to 42 inches apart to allow room for runners and cultivation. Ever-bearing and day-neutral plants produce fewer runners, so you can space them closer if desired.

Dig planting holes large enough to accommodate roots without bending or crowding them. A hole that's too small causes roots to circle and reduces nutrient uptake. Conversely, too-large holes can trap water around the crown. Container-grown strawberry plants—the most common type sold—should have their root ball set in a hole at matching depth.

Practical Takeaway: Plant in spring in cool climates and fall in warm climates. Place the crown exactly at soil level and space plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Proper planting depth and spacing are non-negotiable for plant survival.

Watering, Mulching, and Early Season Care

Newly planted strawberries need consistent moisture while roots establish, typically one to two inches of water per week. However, strawberries cannot tolerate waterlogged soil. The goal is moist soil, not wet soil.

Water deeply but infrequently rather than daily shallow watering. Deep watering encourages roots to grow downward into the soil profile, creating drought-tolerant plants. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses deliver water directly to soil, reducing leaf wetness that promotes fungal diseases. Sprinklers work, but they wet foliage, which increases disease risk during humid conditions.

Mulching provides multiple benefits. A two to three-inch layer of organic mulch (straw, shredded leaves, or wood chips) conserves soil moisture, keeps berries off wet soil, regulates soil temperature, and suppresses weeds. Use mulch, not hay—hay contains weed seeds. Avoid deep mulch piles against the crown, which can trap moisture and cause rot.

Remove flowers during the first season, especially on June-bearing varieties. This seems counterintuitive, but flowering exhausts newly planted strawberries. Removing flowers allows plants to invest energy in root and leaf development instead. Strong, established plants produce more fruit in subsequent years than weak plants forced to fruit immediately. Ever-bearing and day-neutral varieties can produce a light crop in their first year if desired, but removing some flowers still improves plant strength.

Fertilize strawberries monthly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 or one formulated for strawberries (typically higher in potassium). Follow package directions for application rates. Excess nitrogen promotes leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit. Organic growers use compost tea, fish emulsion, or seaweed extract.

Practical Takeaway: Water deeply but infrequently, apply mulch to conserve moisture and keep berries clean, and remove flowers during the first season to establish strong plants. Consistent moisture is essential; inconsistent watering produces small, poor-quality berries.

Managing Runners, Weeds, and Common Pests

As strawberry plants mature, they produce runners—horizontal stems that root and create new plants. Managing runners significantly affects plant density and productivity.

June-bearing strawberry varieties produce many runners and can quickly create a dense mat. You have two options: allow runners to fill the bed (matted row system) or remove most runners (hill system). The mat
