Learn How to Change Emoji Skin Tone Settings

Understanding Emoji Skin Tone Modifiers

Emoji skin tone modifiers are special Unicode characters that work together with certain emojis to change their appearance. When you see an emoji that represents a person—like a waving hand, a person dancing, or a thumbs up—you can apply a skin tone modifier to that emoji to reflect different skin tones. These modifiers were introduced to Unicode in 2015 as a way to make emoji more inclusive and representative of the diverse people who use them.

The skin tone system uses five basic modifier levels, often referred to as light, medium-light, medium, medium-dark, and dark tones. These are technically called Fitzpatrick scale modifiers, named after dermatologist Thomas Fitzpatrick's classification system. When you combine a modifier with a person emoji, the emoji displays in that specific skin tone. For example, a waving hand emoji can appear in any of these five tones, allowing you to select the one that represents you or the person you're trying to depict.

It's important to note that not all emojis support skin tone modifiers. Only emojis that represent people or body parts can have modified skin tones. Emojis of objects, animals, or activities don't have this feature. Additionally, some platforms and devices may display these modified emojis differently. What appears as a specific skin tone on your iPhone might look slightly different on an Android device or computer, though the intended tone should remain recognizable.

Understanding how these modifiers work is the first step toward using them. The modifiers themselves are invisible characters—you won't see them listed separately on your keyboard. Instead, they attach to base emojis and change how those emojis appear. When you hold down on an emoji that supports modifiers on most devices, a menu appears showing you all the available skin tone options.

Practical Takeaway: Skin tone modifiers are Unicode characters that let you customize the appearance of people emojis. They come in five tone options and only work with emojis representing people or body parts. Learning to access these options takes just a few taps on your device.

How to Change Skin Tone on iPhone and iPad

On Apple devices, changing emoji skin tones is straightforward. The process works the same whether you're using an iPhone or iPad with iOS 8.3 or newer. To change the skin tone of an emoji, locate the emoji keyboard first. This is usually done by tapping the smiley face icon or globe icon at the bottom of your keyboard, depending on which keyboard you're currently using. If you don't see an emoji keyboard option, you may need to enable it through your device settings.

Once you're in the emoji keyboard, find the emoji you want to modify. Person emojis that support skin tone changes include waving hands, folded hands, raised fists, thumbs up and thumbs down, pointing fingers, and many occupation-related emojis like police officers, doctors, and teachers. When you locate the emoji you want to use, press and hold your finger on that emoji for about a second. A small menu will appear above the emoji showing the five available skin tone options plus the default yellow tone.

The menu displays the skin tone options horizontally in a row. From left to right, you'll typically see the yellow default emoji first, followed by the five Fitzpatrick modifiers. Simply slide your finger to the skin tone you prefer and release. The emoji will be inserted into your message with that skin tone applied. If you change your mind, you can repeat the process—just find the same emoji again, hold it, and select a different tone.

One helpful feature on Apple devices is that your most recently used skin tone preference is remembered. So if you select the medium-dark tone for one emoji, the next time you hold down on a different emoji that supports skin tones, that medium-dark option will be highlighted or suggested. This makes it faster to use the same tone consistently across multiple emojis in a message. You can change this preference at any time by simply selecting a different tone the next time you customize an emoji.

If you're using an older iPhone or iPad that runs iOS 8.2 or earlier, the skin tone modification feature may not be available. In this case, upgrading your device's operating system would be necessary to access this feature. You can check your iOS version by going to Settings, General, and then About.

Practical Takeaway: On iPhones and iPads, press and hold any person emoji to reveal a menu with five skin tone options. Select your preferred tone and release. Your choice will be remembered for your next emoji selection.

Changing Skin Tones on Android Devices

Android devices offer similar functionality to iPhones when it comes to emoji skin tone modification, though the exact steps may vary slightly depending on your device manufacturer and which keyboard app you're using. Most Android phones running version 5.0 or later support emoji skin tone changes. The most common keyboard apps on Android are Gboard (Google's keyboard) and Samsung's keyboard, though many other options exist.

To modify emoji skin tones on Android with Gboard, open the keyboard and tap the emoji icon (usually a smiley face). Navigate to the category containing the emoji you want to modify. Once you find the emoji, press and hold it with your finger. After a brief moment, a popup menu will appear showing the available skin tone variations for that emoji. Slide your finger across the options or tap the specific tone you want. Release your finger, and the emoji will be inserted with your chosen skin tone.

If you're using a Samsung device, the process is nearly identical. Open your keyboard and access the emoji section. Find the emoji you want to modify, then press and hold it. A menu showing the skin tone options will appear above your finger. Select the tone you prefer, and it will be added to your message. Like on iPhones, Android devices will typically remember your skin tone preference and suggest it the next time you modify an emoji.

Some Android keyboards may have slightly different interfaces. For instance, some keyboards show the skin tone options in a vertical list rather than a horizontal menu, or they might require you to swipe in a particular direction to see the options. The fundamental action remains the same—press and hold the emoji to reveal the skin tone choices. If your keyboard doesn't show this menu, it may be an older version that doesn't support skin tone modification, and you might consider updating it through the Google Play Store or your device's app store.

A useful feature on many Android keyboards is the ability to set a default skin tone preference. Some keyboard apps have settings where you can specify which skin tone you want to use by default when you customize emojis. This can save time if you consistently prefer one particular tone. You'll typically find this option in your keyboard's settings menu.

Practical Takeaway: On Android, press and hold a person emoji in your keyboard to access a menu with skin tone options. The exact appearance of the menu varies by keyboard app, but the process is consistent across most modern Android devices.

Modifying Skin Tones on Computers and Web Applications

Changing emoji skin tones on computers works differently depending on whether you're using a Mac, Windows PC, or accessing web applications. The process requires you to physically locate and access emoji pickers or input methods rather than relying on the press-and-hold functionality available on mobile devices.

On Mac computers, you can access emojis through the Character Viewer. To open this, press Control + Command + Space simultaneously. This brings up a search interface where you can type what you're looking for—for example, typing "waving hand" will show you that emoji in all available skin tones. When you find the variation you want, click on it to insert it into your document or application. The Character Viewer displays all available versions of a skin tone emoji side by side, making it easy to select the specific tone you prefer.

Windows users can access emoji through the emoji panel by pressing Windows Key + Period (.) or Windows Key + Semicolon (;) on Windows 10 and newer. This opens a panel showing emoji organized by category. You can search for specific emojis by typing keywords. For emojis that support skin tones, Windows will often display the different tone variations when you hover over or select the base emoji. Click the specific skin tone version you want to use, and it will be inserted into your active text field.

When using web applications like Gmail, social media platforms, or messaging services accessed through a browser, you typically click on an emoji picker button (often a smiley face icon).
