Learn About Personalized License Plates and Costs
What Are Personalized License Plates?
Personalized license plates, also called vanity plates, are vehicle registration plates that display letters and numbers chosen by the vehicle owner instead of the random combination assigned by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Rather than receiving a standard plate like "ABC 1234," a driver might request "FASTCAR" or "MOM2KIDS" or any combination that meets their state's rules.

These plates serve the same legal function as standard plates—they identify your vehicle and prove registration—but they let you express your personality, business name, or meaningful phrase. For example, a contractor might display "BUILDER1," a parent might show "DAD4LIFE," or a sports fan might wear their team allegiance with "LAKERS24."
Personalized plates became popular in the 1970s when states began offering them as an option. Today, all 50 states and many Canadian provinces offer some form of personalized registration. They remain less common than standard plates, which means many personalized combinations are still available for drivers to request.
The physical plate itself looks similar to a standard plate—it's the same size and made of the same materials. The main difference is the combination of characters displayed. Some states offer decorative backgrounds, special colors, or designs related to state symbols, hobbies, or causes, which can be combined with personalized text.
Takeaway: Personalized plates are an optional registration choice that replaces your standard plate number with a custom combination you select, while maintaining all the same legal and identification functions.
How Much Do Personalized License Plates Cost?
The cost of a personalized license plate varies significantly by state, ranging from about $25 to over $200 for the initial request, plus ongoing annual renewal fees. Most states charge an additional fee on top of your regular vehicle registration renewal cost, not instead of it. Understanding the pricing structure in your state helps you budget for this optional service.

Initial personalized plate fees typically fall into these ranges: low-cost states charge $25 to $50 (examples include states like Ohio and Arizona), mid-range states charge $50 to $100 (many states fall in this bracket), and higher-cost states charge $100 to $200 or more (examples include California and New York). Some states offer tiered pricing based on how many characters you use—shorter plates may cost more because they're more desirable and harder to find available.
Beyond the initial fee, you'll pay an annual renewal cost each year you keep the plate. This renewal fee typically ranges from $10 to $50 annually, depending on your state. In some states, the renewal cost is the same as the initial fee, while in others, it's significantly lower. A few states charge a one-time fee with no annual renewal cost, making that initial expense the only extra cost beyond regular registration.
Some states offer special personalized plates that benefit charities or causes—plates that support wildlife conservation, veteran organizations, or educational institutions. These often cost extra, with a portion of the fee going to the designated organization. Decorative or themed personalized plates (such as those with state symbols or sports team graphics) may also carry premium pricing.
In rare cases, states hold auctions for particularly desirable plates—very short combinations or historically significant numbers. These can sell for thousands of dollars, though this is exceptional and not the standard personalized plate experience.
Takeaway: Budget for an initial fee of $25 to $200 and annual renewal costs of $10 to $50, depending on your state, with some variation based on plate type and character count.
The Rules and Restrictions for Personalized Plates
Every state has specific rules about what text you can display on a personalized plate. These rules exist to ensure public safety, prevent offensive content, and maintain road safety. Understanding these restrictions before requesting a plate prevents rejection and the need to make multiple requests.

Character limits are the first restriction. Most states allow between 2 and 8 characters total, though some states permit up to 10. This might include letters, numbers, and spaces. Some states count spaces as characters, while others don't—this makes a significant difference in what you can actually display. For example, if your state allows 8 characters including spaces, "CAR FAST" takes 8 characters (including the space), but if spaces don't count, you get 7 letters for that phrase.
Content restrictions prohibit certain types of messages. Most states ban: profanity and vulgar language, references to drugs or alcohol, sexual content, hateful or discriminatory language, religious or political messaging in certain contexts, and impersonation of law enforcement. States differ on exactly where these lines fall, so a phrase might be approved in one state but rejected in another. For example, "420LIFE" references marijuana and would likely be rejected in most states, while "PARTY" alone might be approved in some but not others.
Offensive content is subjective but interpreted by state DMV staff. What one reviewer finds acceptable, another might reject. If your request is denied, you typically receive a notice explaining why, and you can submit a new request with different text. Some states allow you to appeal a rejection if you believe it was made in error.
Technical restrictions include: you cannot use only numbers (the plate must contain at least one letter in most states), you cannot impersonate government plates or emergency vehicle plates, you cannot use symbols beyond standard punctuation (like asterisks or hearts), and you cannot duplicate existing plates in your state.
Available combinations depend on what other drivers have already claimed. Shorter, simpler combinations are claimed quickly. If you want a specific plate and it's not available, you might be placed on a waiting list in some states, and if that driver doesn't renew, the plate becomes available to you.
Takeaway: State rules typically limit personalized plates to 2–10 characters, ban offensive or inappropriate content, require at least one letter, and restrict you from duplicating plates already in use.
How to Request a Personalized License Plate
The process for requesting a personalized plate varies by state but generally follows similar steps. Most states now offer online requests through their DMV website, though some still require in-person visits or mail-in forms. Online options are typically faster, taking anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for approval.

The basic process works like this: Visit your state's DMV website and navigate to the personalized or vanity plate section. Search for your desired plate combination to see if it's available—most states show availability instantly online. If it's available, you can proceed with the request. If it's not available, try different combinations until you find one you like that's unclaimed.
You'll need to provide: your vehicle's current registration number, your driver's license number, the plate combination you're requesting, and payment for the fee (usually by credit or debit card online). Some states require you to choose a plate style or background design if multiple options are offered. You may also need to specify whether this is for a new registration or a renewal of an existing plate.
After you submit your request, the state reviews it for compliance with content rules. Approval typically takes one to four weeks, depending on the state and current workload. You'll receive notification—usually by mail—telling you whether your plate was approved or denied. If approved, your new plate will arrive by mail at your registered address, often within 2-4 weeks of approval.
If your request is denied, the notification explains why. You can then submit a new request with different text. There's no limit to how many times you can request different combinations, though each request incurs a fee in most states. Once you receive your new plate, you install it on your vehicle, replacing your old plate. Keep your old plate for records or dispose of it according to your state's guidelines.
Some states allow you to reserve a plate for future use without transferring it to a vehicle immediately, useful if you're not yet ready to use it but want to secure that specific combination. A few states let you transfer a personalized plate to a new vehicle if you change cars without losing it or paying the full fee again.
Takeaway: Most states let you request personalized plates online through their DMV website by checking availability, providing registration and payment information, and waiting 1-4 weeks for approval before receiving your new plate by mail.
