Learn About Paying Your PECO Bill by Phone

Understanding PECO's Phone Payment System

PECO Energy Company serves over 1.6 million electric customers and 500,000 natural gas customers across Pennsylvania and New Jersey. One of the most common ways people pay their PECO bills is by phone, which offers convenience for those who prefer not to pay online or by mail. Paying your bill by phone means contacting PECO directly through their automated system or speaking with a representative who can process your payment over the phone in real time.

The phone payment method has been a standard billing option for decades and remains popular among customers who want immediate confirmation that their payment has been received. When you pay by phone, PECO can process payments from checking accounts, savings accounts, or credit and debit cards. This flexibility means you can choose the payment method that works best for your financial situation on any given month.

PECO's automated phone system is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which makes it possible to pay your bill at times that suit your schedule—whether that's early morning, late evening, or on weekends. The system is designed to be user-friendly, walking you through each step of the payment process. If you prefer to speak with a person rather than use an automated system, PECO also offers customer service representatives during business hours who can help you make a payment and answer questions about your account.

Understanding how the phone payment system works is the first step toward managing your PECO bill with confidence. The process itself is straightforward, but knowing what to expect, what information you'll need, and how the payment is processed can help you avoid mistakes and ensure your payment is applied correctly to your account.

Practical Takeaway: PECO's phone payment option is available around the clock and accepts multiple payment methods, making it a flexible choice for customers with different schedules and preferences.

What Information You'll Need Before Calling

Before you pick up the phone to pay your PECO bill, gathering the right information will make the process go smoothly and take less time. Having your account number on hand is essential—this is the unique identifier for your PECO account and allows the system to pull up your account details immediately. Your account number appears on your billing statement, usually near the top of the document. If you can't find a paper bill, you can log into your PECO online account to locate it.

You'll also need to have the payment amount ready. This is the total amount due shown on your most recent PECO bill. It's important to use the correct amount rather than guessing, as paying less than the full amount due may result in a late fee or service interruption notice. The payment amount includes your charges for electric service, natural gas service (if applicable), taxes, and any previous balance owed. If you're not sure of the exact amount, you can check your latest bill or call PECO ahead of time to ask them to read the balance to you.

Next, you'll need the payment method information. If you're paying from a checking or savings account, have your routing number and account number ready. These numbers appear at the bottom of your checks. If you're paying with a credit or debit card, you'll need the card number, expiration date, and the three- or four-digit security code on the back (or front, depending on the card type). Many people find it helpful to have this information written down before calling, so they don't have to fumble through their wallet or purse while on the phone.

You may also want to have your phone number and a backup phone number available. PECO may use these to contact you about your payment if there's any issue, and having this information ready prevents delays. If you're calling on behalf of someone else's account, you should have written permission to do so, and you may need to provide additional information depending on PECO's policies about account authorization.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your account number, payment amount, and payment method details before calling to streamline the process and avoid interruptions.

How to Make a Payment Through PECO's Automated System

PECO's automated phone system is the quickest way to pay your bill if you prefer not to speak with a representative. To access this system, call PECO's automated payment line at 1-800-752-7326. When you call this number, you'll reach a computerized voice system that guides you through the payment process step by step. The system uses voice recognition and touch-tone dialing, so you can respond either by speaking or by pressing numbers on your phone keypad, depending on what feels most natural to you.

Once you're connected, the automated system will ask you to provide your account number. You can either say your account number or enter it by pressing the numbers on your phone. The system will then confirm the account it has found and ask you to verify that it's the correct account. This verification step is important because it ensures that your payment is being applied to your account and not someone else's by mistake. If the system pulls up the wrong account, you can say no or press the appropriate key, and it will ask you to re-enter your account number.

Next, the system will inform you of your current balance and ask how much you want to pay. You have the option to pay the full amount due or a different amount if you prefer to make a partial payment. Keep in mind that paying less than the full amount due may still result in late fees or impact your account status, so it's generally recommended to pay the full amount if you're able to do so. After you indicate the payment amount, the system will ask you to confirm the figure you've stated.

The system will then ask you to choose your payment method—checking account, savings account, credit card, or debit card. Depending on which method you choose, it will prompt you for the corresponding information. For bank account payments, the system will ask for your routing number and account number. For card payments, you'll enter your card number, expiration date, and security code. The system will repeat this information back to you for verification before processing the payment. Once you confirm all the details, the system will process your payment immediately and provide you with a confirmation number. Write down this confirmation number for your records.

Practical Takeaway: The automated system is available 24/7 and processes payments in minutes—have your account number and payment method information ready before calling for the smoothest experience.

Speaking With a PECO Customer Service Representative

If you prefer to speak with a person or if you have questions about your bill while paying, you can call PECO's customer service line and request to make a payment with a representative. PECO's customer service representatives are available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Eastern Time. You can reach them at 1-800-752-7326 and can indicate to the automated system that you'd like to speak with a representative, or you can wait for the system to offer that option.

When you're connected with a representative, let them know that you'd like to make a payment on your PECO account. The representative will ask for your account number to pull up your account in their system. They'll then read your current balance to you and ask how much you'd like to pay. Unlike the automated system, a representative can discuss your account details with you, explain any charges on your bill, or help you understand why your balance is higher or lower than usual. If you have questions about your service or bill, this is a good time to ask.

The representative will then ask you to provide your payment method information. Just as with the automated system, you can pay from a checking account, savings account, credit card, or debit card. The representative will ask for the appropriate details—routing and account numbers for bank payments, or card number, expiration date, and security code for card payments. Some representatives may offer to email or mail you a receipt if you prefer not to write down the confirmation number. Always request a confirmation number regardless, as this serves as proof of your payment.

One advantage of speaking with a representative is that they can note any special circumstances on your account. For example, if you're experiencing financial hardship or if you have a question about your bill that affects how much you want to pay, a representative can document this and may be able to explain options that might be available to you. They can also help if you have concerns about your account or need to set up recurring payments so you don't have to call each month.
