How to Replace Your Vehicle Registration Sticker
Understanding Vehicle Registration Stickers and When You Need to Replace Them
A vehicle registration sticker, commonly called a registration tag or license plate sticker, is a small decal or emblem that displays your vehicle's registration expiration date. This sticker serves as visual proof that your vehicle is currently registered with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The sticker typically shows two digits representing the month and year when your registration expires. For example, a sticker marked "06/25" means your registration expires in June 2025.

Most states require you to display your current registration sticker on your license plate. The sticker is usually placed in the upper right or lower right corner of your plate, though exact placement varies by state. Law enforcement officers and parking enforcement personnel use this sticker to quickly verify that a vehicle is legally registered without needing to run the plate through a database.
You may need to replace your registration sticker in several situations. The most common reason is that your current sticker has expired and you've renewed your registration. When you renew your registration—typically every one to three years depending on your state—you'll receive a new sticker to replace the old one. Additionally, if your sticker is damaged, faded, torn, or no longer legible, you should replace it. A sticker that's too worn to read could result in a traffic stop or citation, even if your registration is current.
Some vehicle owners need replacement stickers if they transfer their registration to a different vehicle or if they move to a new state. If your plate was damaged or replaced, the new plate may not have a current sticker. Understanding when replacement is necessary helps you maintain legal compliance and avoid potential traffic citations.
Practical Takeaway: Check your current registration sticker at least once every six months to ensure it's readable and hasn't expired. Note the expiration date on your calendar so you're prepared to renew before it passes.
Obtaining Your Replacement Sticker Through Your State DMV
The process for obtaining a replacement registration sticker begins with contacting your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. Each state operates its DMV independently, so procedures and requirements vary. Some states offer multiple methods to request a replacement sticker, while others may have a single standard process.

Many states now allow you to request a replacement sticker online through their DMV website. To do this, you'll typically need to provide your vehicle identification number (VIN), license plate number, current registration number, and driver's license information. The online process may take 10-15 minutes to complete. After submission, the DMV will mail your new sticker to the address on file with your registration, usually within 7-14 business days.
If you prefer to handle this in person, you can visit your local DMV office. Bring your vehicle registration documentation, proof of identification, and your vehicle's current license plate if possible. Staff can process your request immediately, though you may wait in line depending on how busy the office is. Some DMV offices can provide replacement stickers on the spot, while others may mail them to you.
You can also contact your state DMV by phone to request a replacement sticker. Keep your registration documents nearby when you call. The DMV staff will verify your information and may mail the sticker to you or provide other options. Some states offer mail-in requests where you send a form with payment to the DMV, and they return your replacement sticker by mail.
Fees for replacement stickers vary by state. Some states charge $5-$15 for a replacement, while others provide them at no charge if your registration is current. A few states include replacement stickers with your initial registration renewal fee, so you won't pay extra.
Practical Takeaway: Before visiting the DMV or making a phone call, check your state's DMV website to learn which methods are available and what documents you'll need. This preparation can save you time and prevent multiple trips.
Step-by-Step Process for Removing Your Old Sticker
Removing an old registration sticker requires care to avoid damaging your license plate. The sticker is typically made of adhesive material that bonds to the metal plate, so removal must be done carefully to preserve the plate's condition and readability.

Start by gathering tools you'll need: a plastic scraper or old credit card, warm water, dish soap, and a soft cloth. Avoid using metal scrapers, sharp objects, or abrasive materials that could scratch the license plate. If your plate is aluminum or has reflective coating, metal tools can cause permanent damage that makes the plate unreadable.
Begin by wetting the old sticker with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. Let the water sit on the sticker for 2-3 minutes to soften the adhesive. This step is crucial because it makes removal much easier and reduces the risk of tearing the sticker or damaging the plate beneath. You can use a spray bottle to apply the water, or simply use a wet cloth placed on top of the sticker.
Once the adhesive has softened, gently lift one corner of the sticker using your plastic scraper. Work slowly and at a shallow angle against the plate surface. If the sticker begins to tear, stop and apply more warm water to soften the adhesive further. Patience is important here—rushing can leave adhesive residue or scratch the plate.
After removing the sticker, you may have adhesive residue remaining on the plate. Wet this area again with warm soapy water and gently rub with a soft cloth until the residue comes off. For stubborn residue, you can use rubbing alcohol on a cloth and gently rub the area. Never use solvents like acetone or gasoline, as these can damage the plate's reflective coating.
Dry the license plate completely with a clean cloth before applying your new sticker. Make sure the plate surface is completely dry and clean, as any moisture or debris will prevent the new sticker from adhering properly.
Practical Takeaway: Take your time removing the old sticker and clean the plate thoroughly. A clean, dry plate ensures your new sticker will stick securely and remain visible for years to come.
Installing Your New Registration Sticker Correctly
Proper installation of your new registration sticker is essential for it to be visible to law enforcement and to protect against damage or peeling. Your new sticker should come with instructions from your state DMV indicating the correct placement location.

Most states require the registration sticker to be placed in the upper right corner or lower right corner of the rear license plate. Some states specify a distance from the edge of the plate—typically one-quarter inch to one-half inch from the corner. A few states have specific placement requirements on the front plate as well. Check your state's DMV website or the instructions included with your sticker to confirm the correct location for your state.
Before applying the sticker, make sure the license plate is completely clean and dry. Any dust, dirt, water, or debris will reduce the sticker's adhesion and may cause it to peel or fall off. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe the area where you'll place the sticker one more time.
Carefully peel back the backing of the new sticker just enough to see the adhesive side. Position the sticker on the license plate at the correct location specified by your state. For most stickers, you'll want the text and numbers clearly visible and oriented the same direction as the plate. Once positioned correctly, press the sticker firmly onto the plate, starting from one end and moving across to eliminate air bubbles. Apply steady, even pressure across the entire sticker for about 10-15 seconds.
After installation, avoid washing your vehicle or removing the plate for at least 24 hours. This gives the adhesive time to cure fully and bond securely to the plate. Once cured, the sticker should withstand weather, car washes, and normal use for several years.
If you have a newer vehicle with a digital or electronic license plate, check with your DMV about whether a physical sticker is required. Some states are testing digital plates that eliminate the need for adhesive stickers entirely.
Practical Takeaway: Install your sticker in the exact location specified by your state and press firmly for at least 15 seconds. Wait a full day before exposing the plate to water or washing to ensure permanent adhesion.
