How to Change Your Phone Password Easily
Understanding Why You Should Change Your Phone Password
Your phone password is one of the most important security features protecting your personal information. When you set a strong password, you create a barrier between your device and anyone who might try to access it without your permission. According to a 2023 Pew Research Center study, about 64% of Americans use a password on their phone, yet many of these passwords are weak or unchanged for years. Changing your phone password regularly—security experts recommend every three to six months—reduces the risk that someone could guess your password or use old information to access your device.

Your phone stores sensitive data including banking information, email accounts, photos, personal documents, and contact information. If someone gains access to your unlocked phone, they could potentially steal your identity, access your financial accounts, or misuse your personal photos and information. This risk increases if you've had the same password for a long time, if someone has watched you enter it, or if you've shared it with others in the past.
Changing your password is particularly important after certain events: if you believe someone has seen your password, if you've shared it with a person and that relationship has ended, if you've used a device at a public location, or if you simply want to update your security routine. Unlike some security tasks that require technical knowledge, changing your phone password is a straightforward process that takes just a few minutes.
Practical takeaway: Changing your phone password regularly is a basic but effective way to protect your personal information. Most phones make this process straightforward, whether you use an iPhone, Android device, or other smartphone.
How to Change Your Password on an iPhone
iPhone users can change their screen time passcode, Apple ID password, or accessibility passcode depending on which security feature they want to update. The most common password to change is your screen lock passcode, which is the code you enter when you turn on your phone or wake it from sleep. To change this on an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, begin by opening the Settings app on your home screen. Look for the Settings icon, which appears as a gray gear symbol. Tap on "Face ID & Passcode" or "Touch ID & Passcode" depending on your device model and security method.

Once you're in the Face ID or Touch ID settings, you'll need to enter your current passcode when prompted. This confirms that you're authorized to make changes to these security settings. After you've entered your current code, look for an option that says "Change Passcode." Tap this option, and your phone will ask you to enter your current passcode one more time as a confirmation. Then, you can enter your new passcode twice to confirm it matches. Your new passcode takes effect immediately.
If you have an older iPhone model running iOS 15 or earlier, the process is similar but may be labeled slightly differently. Go to Settings, then select "Face ID & Passcode" or "Touch ID & Passcode," enter your current passcode, and select "Change Passcode." The steps that follow are the same as described above.
When creating a new passcode, you have options for length and complexity. Apple allows you to set a simple four-digit code, a more complex alphanumeric code with numbers and letters, or a custom code. Security experts recommend using at least six digits or more if your phone offers that option, as longer codes are harder to guess. Avoid using obvious sequences like "1234" or personal information like your birth year.
Practical takeaway: iPhone users can change their lock screen passcode in approximately two minutes by navigating to Settings, Face ID & Passcode, and selecting Change Passcode. The process requires you to verify your current code before setting a new one.
How to Change Your Password on an Android Device
Android phones may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer and the version of Android operating system installed, but the general process remains similar across most devices. To change your screen lock password on most Android phones, start by opening the Settings app. This is usually found in your app drawer or by swiping down from the top of your screen and tapping the Settings icon. Once Settings is open, look for security-related options. On many Android devices, this section is labeled "Security," "Security and Privacy," "Biometrics and Security," or simply "Lock Screen."

Once you've found the security section, look for an option labeled "Screen Lock," "Lock Screen," or "Passwords and Security." Tap this option, and your phone will likely ask you to enter your current password as confirmation that you have permission to make changes. Enter your current password or PIN. After verification, you should see an option to change your screen lock method or password. Select this option, and your phone will walk you through creating a new password or PIN.
When setting your new password on Android, you'll choose what type of lock you want: a PIN (numbers only), a pattern (drawing a sequence on dots), a password (letters and numbers), or biometric options like fingerprint or face recognition. If you choose a PIN or password, make it something you can remember but others cannot easily guess. Most security recommendations suggest using at least six characters, mixing numbers with letters if your phone allows it, and avoiding personal information.
Different Android manufacturers like Samsung, Google Pixel, and others may have slightly different menu names and layouts, but the core steps are consistent: open Settings, navigate to Security, find Screen Lock options, verify your current password, and create a new one. If you have trouble locating these settings on your specific device, you can search the Settings app using the search function, which appears as a magnifying glass icon in many Android versions.
Practical takeaway: Android users can change their screen lock password through Settings by navigating to the Security or Lock Screen section, verifying their current password, and entering a new one. The exact menu names vary by device manufacturer, but the process takes only a few minutes.
Creating a Strong Password You Can Actually Remember
A strong password balances two competing needs: it should be difficult for others to guess, but memorable enough that you don't forget it and get locked out of your own device. Security researchers have found that many people create passwords that are easy to remember but also easy to guess, such as "12345678" or their child's name followed by their birth year. Other people create very strong passwords but then write them down somewhere accessible or reuse the same password across multiple devices and accounts.

One method for creating memorable but strong passwords involves combining unrelated words with numbers and symbols. For example, instead of using "John1985," you might use "Blue-Elephant-47-Lamp." This type of password is much harder to guess because it doesn't follow predictable patterns like birthdates or names. Another approach is to use a passphrase—a short sentence or memorable phrase where you take the first letter of each word. For example, "My dog loves to play fetch" becomes "MdltPf," which you could then modify to "MdltPf#47" by adding numbers or symbols.
When creating your new phone password, consider these guidelines: use at least six to eight characters if possible, mix numbers with letters or symbols if your phone allows, avoid using your name, birthdate, or address, don't use obvious sequences like "12345" or "ABCDE," and avoid repeating the same character multiple times. If your phone offers the option, using a longer code is better than a shorter one—a ten-character password is significantly harder to crack than a six-character one.
Once you've created your new password, write it down in a secure location away from your phone, such as a locked drawer or a password manager app specifically designed to store passwords securely. Do not write it on a sticky note attached to your computer or phone, and do not text it to yourself or email it to yourself. A password manager app like Bitwarden, 1Password, or similar applications can store passwords securely and help you remember multiple different passwords for different accounts.
Practical takeaway: Strong passwords combine letters, numbers, and symbols while avoiding personal information and obvious patterns. Create a memorable password by using unrelated words or phrases, and store it securely if you're worried about forgetting it.
What to Do If You Forget Your New Password
If you change your phone password and then forget it, you'll need to recover access to your device using backup methods. The exact recovery process depends on your phone type and your backup settings. For iPhone users who forget their passcode, Apple provides recovery options through iCloud.
