How to Cancel Your Netflix Subscription Guide
Understanding Netflix Subscription Types and Costs
Netflix offers several subscription tiers, each with different pricing and features. As of 2024, Netflix has restructured its plans to include options with ads and without ads. The basic plan with ads costs around $6.99 per month and allows streaming on one device at a time with ads shown during content. The standard plan without ads runs approximately $15.49 per month and permits streaming on two devices simultaneously in standard definition. The premium plan costs about $22.99 monthly and allows four simultaneous streams in 4K quality.

Understanding your current plan matters because it affects what you'll see when you access your account settings. Some users have older plans that are no longer offered to new subscribers. Netflix regularly changes its pricing and plan structure, so your monthly cost may differ from these figures depending on when you signed up and your location. The company typically notifies users of price changes before they take effect.
Netflix also offers the option to pay for your subscription through different methods. You might be paying directly to Netflix with a credit or debit card, through your mobile phone bill if you signed up via iOS or Android, or through a third-party payment processor. The payment method you used matters for cancellation because you may need to address billing with multiple parties.
Practical takeaway: Before canceling, log into your Netflix account and note your current plan type, monthly cost, and payment method. This information helps you understand what will stop being charged and when.
Steps to Cancel Your Netflix Account
Canceling Netflix involves accessing your account settings and choosing a cancellation option. Start by visiting netflix.com and signing into your account using your email address and password. Once logged in, click on your profile icon in the upper right corner of the screen. A menu will appear with several options. Look for "Account" or "Settings" depending on your device type. This takes you to your account page where Netflix displays your current plan and billing information.

On the account page, scroll down until you find a section labeled "Membership & Billing" or simply "Billing." This section shows your current plan, payment method, and billing date. Near this section, you should see an option that says "Cancel Membership" or "Cancel your membership." Click this option. Netflix will then ask you to confirm that you want to cancel and may offer you options to pause your subscription instead, which temporarily stops charges without fully closing your account.
When you click to proceed with cancellation, Netflix typically presents reasons why you might want to stay, including special offers like discounts on future months. You can disregard these offers and continue with cancellation if that's your choice. The final step involves confirming your cancellation. Netflix will ask you to verify that you understand your access will end on a specific date, which is typically the end of your current billing cycle.
The entire process takes about five to ten minutes from login to final confirmation. Netflix does not require you to call customer service or jump through complicated steps. The online process works the same whether you're using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Practical takeaway: Write down the exact cancellation date Netflix gives you. This is when your access ends, and you won't be charged after this date.
Canceling Subscriptions Tied to Phone Bills or Third-Party Services
If you signed up for Netflix through your mobile phone carrier, such as T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T, the cancellation process differs. Some carriers offer Netflix as part of a bundle or as an add-on service. In this situation, canceling through the Netflix website alone may not stop your charges because your carrier is billing you, not Netflix directly. You must contact your phone provider to remove Netflix from your bill.

Contact your carrier's customer service using the number on your bill or through their website. Tell the representative that you want to remove Netflix from your account. They can typically process this change immediately or within one to two business days. Ask the representative to confirm the removal in writing or note the time and date of your request for your records.
Similarly, if you have Netflix through your Apple ID, Amazon Prime Video membership, or another bundled service, you need to cancel through that platform, not through Netflix directly. For Apple subscriptions, go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, select "Subscriptions," find Netflix, and choose "Cancel Subscription." For Amazon Prime Video, log into your Amazon account, go to "Your Account," select "Prime Video Settings," and look for the option to remove Netflix from your subscriptions.
Some people have Netflix charged through multiple payment methods without realizing it. You might have both a direct Netflix subscription and Netflix included with a phone plan or other service. In these cases, you need to cancel both separately.
Practical takeaway: Check your last few billing statements to identify whether Netflix charges come from Netflix directly or through another company. Cancel through the company actually charging you.
What Happens After You Cancel
After you confirm cancellation, Netflix continues working until the end of your current billing cycle. If your billing date is on the 15th of each month and you cancel on the 20th, you retain access through the 14th of the following month. Netflix sends a confirmation email with your final access date. This email serves as proof that you initiated cancellation, so keep it for your records.

During the period between cancellation and your access ending, you can continue using Netflix normally. Download shows or movies to watch offline if you want to save content before losing access. There's no penalty for watching Netflix during this window, and your experience remains unchanged.
After your access date passes, trying to log into Netflix shows an error message stating that your subscription has ended. You cannot access any Netflix content, including shows you started watching. If you change your mind after cancellation, you can reactivate your account by logging in and choosing to restart your subscription. Reactivation typically starts immediately if done during your access period or on the first day after your access ends.
Netflix does not offer refunds for partial months. If you cancel halfway through a billing cycle, you lose any unused portion of that month's payment. The company also does not credit unused time toward a future subscription if you reactivate later.
Your saved preferences, watch history, and profile information may remain in Netflix's system for some time, though the company's privacy policy describes how this data is handled. If you want information about what data Netflix holds about you, you can make a data request through Netflix's privacy page.
Practical takeaway: Mark your access end date on a calendar. This prevents accidental charges if Netflix reactivates your subscription or if you forget you canceled.
Preventing Unexpected Reactivation Charges
Occasionally, customers discover they were charged for Netflix after canceling. This happens for several reasons. The most common cause is reactivation without the account holder's knowledge. If you log back into Netflix after cancellation, the system may automatically restart your subscription. Some users think they're simply checking if the service is gone and accidentally reactivate by logging in.

To prevent this, simply don't log into your Netflix account after cancellation unless you intend to restart. If you're concerned about forgetting this, log into your email account instead and look for billing confirmation emails rather than logging into Netflix itself.
Another cause of unexpected charges involves payment methods. If your Netflix subscription was tied to a credit card and you've since closed that card or it expired, Netflix may keep trying to charge it. When the charge fails repeatedly, Netflix eventually stops attempting payment. However, if you update your payment method, Netflix may retry old charges. Before canceling, review your payment method in your account settings.
For subscriptions linked to phone bills or other services, charges sometimes continue because the cancellation wasn't fully processed by that company. Call the third-party company back after several weeks to confirm the removal. Ask them to provide a confirmation number or reference number for the cancellation.
Monitor your credit card or bank statements for at least two billing cycles after your access ends. If you see a Netflix charge appear, contact Netflix customer service with your confirmation email showing cancellation. Netflix can typically reverse unauthorized charges within a specific timeframe.
Practical takeaway: Set a phone reminder for one week after your access ends to check your bank statement for any Netflix charges.
Considering Pause Instead of Cancel
Netflix offers an alternative to full cancellation called pausing your subscription. This feature temporarily stops charges without closing your account.
