Understanding Eyeliner Types and Their Characteristics

Eyeliner comes in several different formulations, and understanding the differences between them helps you choose what works best for your eye shape and personal preference. Each type has distinct qualities that affect how it applies, how long it lasts, and the finish it creates.

Liquid eyeliner is made from a pigmented solution that flows through a thin brush or pen applicator. This type delivers bold, precise lines and is popular for creating dramatic looks. Liquid eyeliner typically has a matte or glossy finish depending on the formula. The main challenge with liquid eyeliner is that it requires a steady hand during application, and it can take practice to create even lines. Most liquid eyeliners dry completely within seconds to a minute, which means you have a small window to adjust the line before it sets.

Pencil eyeliner has a waxy or creamy core that you sharpen to a point before use. This format is often considered more forgiving than liquid because you can blend it or adjust it slightly after application. Pencil eyeliner works well for creating softer, smoky looks or for lining the waterline (the area inside your lash line). The downside is that pencil eyeliner may smudge throughout the day, especially in warm weather or if you have oily eyelids.

Gel eyeliner comes in a pot and you apply it with a small brush. It offers precision similar to liquid eyeliner but with slightly more working time before it dries. Gel formulas tend to stay put longer than pencil eyeliner and don't dry out as quickly as some liquid formulas. Many people find gel eyeliner easier to control than liquid because the consistency is thicker and more stable on the brush.

Felt-tip or marker-style eyeliners have a flexible felt applicator similar to a marker pen. These are very popular because they're intuitive to use and create clean lines. The felt tip mimics how you'd naturally draw, making them beginner-friendly. However, they can dry out over time, and the tip may fray with use.

Kohl eyeliner is a softer formula, often used for lining the waterline or creating smoky looks. It blends easily and gives a softer appearance than liquid or gel. Kohl doesn't last as long as other types and may transfer throughout the day.

• Liquid eyeliner: Best for precise, bold lines and dramatic looks
• Pencil eyeliner: Good for beginners and softer, blended looks
• Gel eyeliner: Offers precision with more working time
• Felt-tip eyeliner: Intuitive and beginner-friendly
• Kohl eyeliner: Creates soft looks and works well on the waterline

Practical Takeaway: Start with a felt-tip or pencil eyeliner if you're new to eyeliner application. These formats are more forgiving and easier to control while you develop your technique. Once you're comfortable with basic application, you can experiment with liquid or gel formulas for different looks.

Learning About Eye Shapes and Line Placement

Different eye shapes require slightly different eyeliner placement strategies to create balanced, flattering looks. Understanding your eye shape helps you know where to focus the eyeliner and what line thickness works best for your features.

Almond-shaped eyes are considered a neutral eye shape that works well with most eyeliner styles. The eye is wider at the center and tapers at both the inner and outer corners. For almond eyes, you can apply eyeliner along the entire lash line with the line being slightly thicker in the center of the lid. Many eyeliner techniques work beautifully on almond-shaped eyes.

Round eyes appear wide and circular. To make round eyes appear more elongated and balanced, eyeliner placement should emphasize the outer corner. Apply eyeliner along the upper lash line, then extend it slightly past the outer corner at an upward angle. This creates the illusion of a lifted eye. On the lower lash line, focus the eyeliner on the outer third of the eye, leaving the inner corner light to maintain the open appearance.

Hooded eyes have a fold of skin that partially covers the eyelid when the eye is open. The eyeliner should be placed on the part of the lid that's actually visible when you look forward. Applying eyeliner too close to the inner corner may not show when your eye is open. Many people with hooded eyes find that applying eyeliner slightly thicker and focusing it on the outer half of the lid creates the most visible effect.

Monolid eyes (common in East Asian populations) have little to no visible crease. Eyeliner looks striking on monolids because the lid is a blank canvas. You can apply eyeliner across the entire upper lash line and extend it outward for a cat-eye effect. The eyeliner will be visible from the front and the side, making even subtle lines stand out.

Downturned eyes have outer corners that point downward. To create a lifting effect, apply eyeliner along the upper lash line, but make the line thicker and extend it upward as it approaches the outer corner. This creates an uplifted appearance. On the lower lash line, avoid putting dark eyeliner on the outer corner, as this can emphasize the downward angle.

Upturned eyes have outer corners that naturally angle upward (sometimes called "cat eyes"). These eyes naturally appear lifted. You can use eyeliner to enhance this shape by creating a subtle cat-eye wing, or you can apply eyeliner more softly for a different look. Upturned eyes work well with most eyeliner styles.

Close-set eyes (eyes positioned closer together than ideal) benefit from eyeliner placement that opens up the inner eye. Apply eyeliner starting slightly away from the inner corner rather than directly at it. This creates the illusion of more space between the eyes.

Wide-set eyes (more space between the eyes than typical) can use eyeliner placement that brings visual focus to the center. Applying a slightly thicker line closer to the inner corner can create balance.

• Identify your eye shape by looking at how your outer corner angles and whether you have a visible crease
• Round eyes benefit from outer-corner focus to create elongation
• Hooded eyes need eyeliner placed on the visible portion of the lid
• Monolids show eyeliner beautifully across the entire lid
• Downturned eyes look lifted when the line angles upward at the outer corner
• Close-set eyes benefit from eyeliner that leaves the inner corner light

Practical Takeaway: Before applying eyeliner, spend a moment observing your eye shape and how it looks when you're looking straight ahead. Notice where a crease appears (if anywhere), how your outer corner angles, and how much lid space is visible. This observation takes two minutes but makes a significant difference in how you place your eyeliner.

Step-by-Step Basic Eyeliner Application Techniques

Learning basic application techniques gives you a foundation for creating any eyeliner look. The most fundamental eyeliner application is a simple lash line definition, which works for everyday wear and takes practice to execute smoothly.

Before applying eyeliner, prepare your eyelid. Make sure your skin is clean and any eyeshadow primer or base product is applied and dry. Eyeshadow primer creates a smoother surface for eyeliner and helps it adhere better throughout the day. If you don't have primer, a tiny dab of concealer works as a substitute. Pat the area gently with your finger to set it.

For lash line definition with any eyeliner type, start at the inner corner of your upper lash line. Place your eyeliner at the base of your lashes (where the lashes come out of your skin) rather than above or below them. This creates the illusion that your lashes are thicker. If you're using pencil or liquid eyeliner, you can place the applicator against your lid and gently draw it along the lash line. Work in small sections from inner corner to center, then center to outer
