Free Guide to Uploading ID on Facebook
Understanding Facebook's ID Verification Process
Facebook uses ID verification as a security measure to protect user accounts and prevent fraud. When you upload an ID to Facebook, you're providing the platform with a government-issued document to confirm your identity. This process helps Facebook maintain trust and safety across its platform by reducing fake accounts and unauthorized access.

The ID verification system works by allowing users to submit photos of government-issued identification documents. Facebook's systems then review these documents to confirm that the person using the account matches the ID holder. Common reasons users need to verify their identity include recovering a locked account, confirming their age for certain features, or meeting security requirements after unusual account activity.
Facebook accepts various forms of government-issued ID, including driver's licenses, passports, national ID cards, and other official identification documents. The platform requires that your ID be current and valid. Expired IDs may not be accepted, though Facebook's policies can vary based on your country and situation. Your document must be clear enough that the information is legible, and all four corners should be visible in your photo.
It's important to understand that ID verification on Facebook is different from other online ID processes. Facebook does not use your ID information for purposes beyond account verification and security. The platform has specific privacy protections for identity documents. Once your identity is confirmed, Facebook deletes the photos of your ID within a set timeframe, typically within 30 days.
Practical Takeaway: Before uploading your ID, gather your valid government-issued identification and ensure you can take clear photos where all corners are visible and all text is readable. Know that this process is specifically for account security and identity confirmation, not for other purposes.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Uploading Your ID
The process of uploading your ID to Facebook involves several straightforward steps. First, you'll need to log into your Facebook account or navigate to the page that requests your ID. This typically occurs when you're trying to regain access to a locked account, confirm your age, or complete a security check. Facebook will provide a specific link or notification guiding you to the ID upload section.

Once you're in the ID upload area, Facebook will show you instructions about what documents are acceptable and what your photos should include. You'll typically see guidance about taking clear photos of both the front and back of your ID. The platform usually offers options to either upload photos you've already taken or take new photos directly through the Facebook interface using your device's camera.
When taking photos of your ID, position your document on a flat surface with good lighting. Natural lighting during daytime works well, but avoid glare or shadows that might make text hard to read. Hold your camera or phone directly above the ID at a slight angle, or straight on if possible. Make sure all four corners of the ID are visible in the photo. Take a clear photo of the front side showing your face, name, and document number. Then take another photo of the back side if your ID has important information there.
After capturing your photos, you'll upload them through Facebook's interface. The platform will show you the images before you submit them, allowing you to verify they're clear and complete. Review each photo carefully to ensure text is readable and corners are visible. If a photo isn't clear enough, you can retake it before submitting. Once you're satisfied with your photos, proceed with the submission.
Facebook will process your ID verification, which typically takes a few days. During this time, your account may remain restricted depending on why you submitted the ID. You should receive a notification once Facebook has reviewed your submission. The platform will let you know whether your identity has been confirmed or if there are issues with your photos that require resubmission.
Practical Takeaway: Prepare your ID ahead of time, use natural lighting for clear photos, ensure all four corners are visible, and review your photos before submitting to reduce the likelihood of needing to resubmit.
What Information Facebook Needs and Privacy Considerations
Facebook collects specific information from your ID document during the verification process. The platform reviews your name, date of birth, document number, and photograph to confirm you are who you say you are. Facebook's systems compare the photo on your ID with your Facebook profile photo to verify they match. The platform does not retain your full ID information permanently; instead, it uses this data only for the verification process.

Privacy is a significant concern when uploading government-issued identification online. Facebook has stated that it takes several measures to protect identity documents. The company uses encryption to secure your ID photos during transmission. The images are stored on secure servers with limited access. Importantly, Facebook states that it deletes photos of identity documents within approximately 30 days after verification is complete, regardless of whether your identity was confirmed or the submission was rejected.
Your ID information is not used for marketing, advertising targeting, or other Facebook business purposes. Facebook separates identity verification data from your regular account data and advertising profile. This means that uploading your ID should not result in targeted ads based on your document information. However, it's worth noting that Facebook does combine this verification data with other information it collects to detect fraud and prevent misuse of the platform.
You should be aware that if your account is involved in a legal investigation or law enforcement matter, Facebook may retain and disclose your ID information according to legal requirements and its privacy policies. This is rare, but it's important to understand that extreme circumstances may override the typical 30-day deletion policy.
Before uploading your ID, consider taking your own precautions. You might photograph only the sections of your ID that are necessary rather than including unnecessary personal details if possible. Be certain you're on Facebook's official website or app and not a phishing site that mimics Facebook's appearance. Never share your ID information through email, messages, or other channels claiming to be Facebook support.
Practical Takeaway: Understand that Facebook deletes your ID photos within about 30 days, your information won't be used for ads or marketing, and you should only upload through Facebook's official website or app to protect your privacy and security.
Common Reasons for ID Upload Rejection and How to Address Them
Facebook may reject your ID submission for several specific reasons. The most common issue is that photos are not clear enough to read the text on your document. This happens when lighting is poor, the camera is out of focus, or the angle creates glare or shadows. If your photos are rejected for clarity, you'll receive a notification explaining this. You can then retake photos with better lighting and from a better angle, ensuring text is sharp and readable.

Another frequent reason for rejection is that not all corners of the ID are visible in the photos. Facebook requires that your entire document be shown in the frame. If part of your ID is cut off at the edges, the submission may be rejected. When retaking photos, make sure you're positioned far enough away from the ID that all four corners are clearly visible within the frame while the document remains large enough that text is readable.
The photo on your ID might not match your current Facebook profile photo clearly enough. This can happen if you've changed your appearance significantly, wear different glasses or facial hair than in your ID photo, or if lighting makes it hard to compare the two images. If this is the issue, you might retake your Facebook profile photo to more closely match your ID, or provide a clear selfie during the ID verification process if Facebook offers that option.
Expired IDs may be rejected depending on Facebook's current policies and your location. If your document has expired, you may need to obtain a renewed ID before attempting verification again. Some regions' policies are more flexible about expired documents than others, so your specific situation may vary.
If your submission is rejected multiple times, you may encounter a temporary waiting period before you can resubmit. This is a security measure to prevent misuse of the verification system. If you continue to experience issues after several attempts, you can seek additional information through Facebook's support resources, though be cautious about providing ID information through unofficial channels.
Practical Takeaway: Most rejections relate to photo quality or incomplete document visibility. Improve lighting, adjust your angle to capture all corners, and ensure text is sharp and readable when resubmitting your ID.
Security Concerns and Protecting Yourself During ID Verification
Uploading identification documents online carries inherent risks that you should understand before proceeding. One major concern is phishing, where scammers create fake Facebook pages or send deceptive messages asking you to verify your identity. These fraudulent sites capture your ID information and use it for identity theft or fraud. To protect yourself, always verify
