Free Guide to Paying California Speeding Tickets Online

Understanding California Speeding Ticket Basics

A speeding ticket in California is a citation issued when a driver exceeds the posted speed limit or drives too fast for current road conditions. California Vehicle Code Section 22350 prohibits driving faster than is reasonable and prudent for existing conditions, while Section 22351 sets specific speed limits on different road types. When an officer stops you for speeding, they document the alleged violation and issue a ticket, which becomes a legal record you must address.

California classifies speeding violations into categories based on how much over the limit you were driving. Exceeding the limit by 1 to 15 miles per hour typically results in an infraction, the least serious traffic violation. Speeds 16 or more miles per hour over the limit may still be an infraction but carries higher fines and more serious consequences. Speeding in construction zones, residential areas, or school zones carries enhanced penalties regardless of the speed amount. In 2023, California courts processed approximately 1.2 million traffic citations, with speeding violations representing roughly 35 percent of those cases.

The fine amount varies by county and the specific speed violation. A first-time speeding ticket for driving 1 to 15 miles per hour over the limit typically costs between $238 and $490 in base fines, though court fees and assessments add significantly to the total. Fines increase substantially for higher speeds—driving 26 to 99 miles per hour over the limit can result in base fines between $487 and $1,000, plus additional fees.

Beyond the financial impact, a speeding conviction adds points to your California driving record. Most speeding violations add one point. Accumulating four or more points within a 12-month period, six points within 24 months, or eight points within 36 months can result in license suspension. Insurance companies monitor these points and typically raise premiums following a conviction.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding the severity of your specific violation helps you recognize your options. Review your ticket carefully to confirm the posted speed limit, the speed you were allegedly driving, and the location where the violation occurred, as errors on the ticket can affect your case.

How California Online Ticket Payment Systems Work

Most California counties now operate online traffic ticket payment systems that allow drivers to pay fines without visiting a courthouse in person. These systems were expanded significantly after 2020 to reduce in-person visits. Each county manages its own system through its court or traffic department website, meaning the specific website and process varies by location.

The online payment process typically works as follows: you visit your county's court website, locate the traffic or citation payment section, and enter your ticket number and driver's license number or case number. The system then displays your citation details, including the violation, fine amount, and any associated fees. You review the charges and proceed to payment, where you select a payment method—usually credit card, debit card, or electronic check. Payment processing typically takes several business days to post to your account, though some counties process payments the same day.

California's largest counties have well-established online systems. Los Angeles County, with over 1 million traffic citations issued annually, processes payments through its court website where you can pay by credit card, debit card, or electronic check. San Diego County uses a similar system accessible through the Superior Court website. Smaller counties may have less sophisticated systems or limited online payment options, potentially requiring you to call or visit in person.

When paying online, you receive a confirmation number immediately after payment. This confirmation serves as proof of payment. However, paying your ticket online does not dismiss the violation from your record—it acknowledges liability and results in a conviction on your driving history. If you wish to contest the ticket, you generally should not pay online, as payment constitutes an admission of guilt.

Some counties offer payment plans for drivers unable to pay the full fine immediately. These plans typically allow you to pay in installments over several months without additional interest, though fees may apply. Payment plans can usually be set up during the online payment process or through a separate form submitted to the court.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your county's specific online payment portal by searching "[your county name] traffic ticket payment" or visiting your county superior court website. Write down your ticket number before you begin, as you will need it to access your citation information.

Finding Your County's Traffic Court Payment Website

California has 58 counties, and each operates its own superior court system with different online platforms. Finding the correct website for your county is the first step in paying online. The most direct approach is to search for "[county name] superior court traffic ticket payment" in a web browser. This typically leads to the official court website within the first few results.

Each California county superior court maintains a main website listing all available services. From these main pages, you can navigate to sections labeled "Pay a Citation," "Traffic Violations," "Online Payment," or similar headings. For example, Alameda County's superior court website features a dedicated "Pay Your Traffic Ticket" page accessible from the homepage. Santa Clara County provides a "Pay a Traffic Ticket Online" section within its criminal/traffic division area.

If you cannot locate the payment option through the county website, you can contact the traffic division directly. Most counties list phone numbers for traffic-related inquiries on their court websites. Representatives can provide the direct link to their online payment system and answer questions about whether your specific ticket can be paid online.

Some third-party websites attempt to collect traffic ticket information to direct you to payment portals. While some are legitimate county partnerships, others charge fees for information that is free on official court websites. To avoid unnecessary charges, use only official county superior court websites when searching for payment options.

The California court system's official website, courts.ca.gov, provides a directory of all 58 county superior courts with links to their individual websites. This serves as a reliable starting point if you are unsure about your county or having difficulty locating the payment system. The directory lists courts alphabetically and includes direct contact information.

Practical Takeaway: Determine which county issued your ticket by checking the address on the ticket itself. Go directly to that county's official superior court website rather than using general search engines, which may return payment services that charge fees. Bookmark the correct page once found for future reference.

Information About Contesting a Speeding Ticket

If you believe the speeding ticket was issued in error or you wish to challenge the violation, you have the right to contest it in court. This process is different from simply paying the fine online. Understanding your options helps you decide whether contesting the ticket makes sense for your situation.

In California, you can contest a traffic ticket by requesting a traffic hearing, also called a trial. You must submit this request within 30 days of receiving the ticket, though some counties allow up to 90 days in certain circumstances. This request is typically made through your county court, either online, by mail, or in person. When you request a hearing, you are essentially stating that you do not admit to the violation and want the opportunity to dispute the ticket in front of a judge or traffic referee.

Common reasons drivers contest speeding tickets include officer error in speed measurement, evidence that the speed limit signs were obscured or missing, issues with radar or laser gun calibration, or procedural errors in how the ticket was issued. For example, if an officer used a radar gun that was not properly calibrated within the required timeframe, this can be grounds for dismissal. California law requires radar and laser equipment to be calibrated annually, and defense arguments sometimes focus on whether this maintenance was current.

Approximately 8 to 12 percent of traffic tickets contested in California result in dismissal or acquittal, according to traffic court statistics. This rate varies by county and the specific evidence presented. Many drivers do not contest tickets simply because they are unaware of the process or believe the outcome is predetermined. Understanding that contested cases do sometimes result in dismissal can help you make an informed decision.

When you contest a ticket, the burden of proof rests with the prosecution (the city or county). The officer must testify about how they determined your speed and present evidence supporting the citation. You have the right to question this evidence and present your own defense. If you cannot attend a hearing, some counties allow you to contest a ticket "in writing," submitting a declaration explaining your position without appearing in person.

Practical Takeaway: If you wish to contest your ticket, submit your request within 30 days of receiving it through your county court system. Gather any
