Alabama recognizes several types of driver's licenses based on the type of vehicle you plan to operate. A regular Class D license allows you to drive passenger vehicles, pickup trucks, and vans under a certain weight limit. A commercial driver's license (CDL) is required if you operate commercial vehicles weighing over 26,001 pounds or if you transport hazardous materials. A motorcycle endorsement permits you to operate motorcycles on public roads. Each license type has different requirements and testing procedures.

The state of Alabama requires all driver's license holders to be at least 16 years old. However, different age groups have different restrictions. If you receive your license before age 18, you may have driving restrictions such as limited hours for night driving or passenger limitations. These restrictions typically lift once you reach 18 years old, though you may still need to renew your license at the new age tier.

Alabama residents must renew their driver's licenses every four years, or every eight years if you are 60 years old or older. Vision requirements remain consistent throughout your driving life—you must be able to pass a vision screening showing at least 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without correction. Color blindness does not prevent you from obtaining or holding a license.

Practical takeaway: Before visiting a Driver License Examining Officer's office in Dothan, gather your birth certificate, proof of residency, and Social Security card. Write down any traffic violations or license suspensions from your past, as this information will be requested during your transaction.

Documents You Will Need for License and Registration

When applying for a driver's license or vehicle registration in Dothan, you must present several documents to verify your identity, residency, and Social Security number. The Alabama Department of Public Safety maintains specific requirements for document submission, and having the correct paperwork prevents delays and multiple trips to the office.

For proof of identity, Alabama accepts several documents including a birth certificate, passport, visa, or military discharge papers. The birth certificate must be an original or certified copy—photocopies are not accepted. If you were born outside the United States, you may present your visa, permanent resident card, or employment authorization document. Military personnel can use their military ID card or discharge papers as proof of identity.

Proof of Alabama residency is required for all license and registration transactions. Documents that show your name and current Alabama address include utility bills dated within 60 days, a bank or credit union statement, a lease agreement, a mortgage statement, or insurance documents. Government documents like voter registration cards or hunting and fishing licenses also serve as residency proof. You need at least one document showing your current address—a document from more than 60 days ago will not be accepted.

For vehicle registration, you need your vehicle's title or manufacturer's certificate of origin if the vehicle is new. The title must show ownership or list you as a co-owner. If you have an existing registration you are renewing, you may bring your current registration card instead. You also need proof of a passing vehicle inspection from an authorized inspection station—vehicle inspections in Alabama are valid for one year.

If you are registering a vehicle with a lien holder, bring documentation showing the lien holder's name and address. This information typically appears on your title document. For commercial vehicles or those requiring special registration, additional documents may be needed such as proof of insurance or commercial licensing paperwork.

Practical takeaway: Create a checklist three days before your visit to a Dothan licensing or registration office. Place original documents in a folder with copies. Check the Houston County Courthouse or Alabama DMV office website to confirm which documents are currently accepted, as requirements may shift.

The Driver's License Testing Process in Dothan

Obtaining a driver's license in Dothan involves multiple testing stages designed to confirm that you understand traffic laws and can safely operate a vehicle. The process includes a written knowledge test, a vision screening, and a practical driving test. Understanding what each test covers helps you prepare more effectively.

The written knowledge test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions about Alabama traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. You must answer at least 40 questions correctly—an 80 percent score—to pass. The test covers topics like right-of-way rules, speed limits, proper use of signals, parking regulations, and what to do at traffic lights and stop signs. You may retake the test if you do not pass on your first attempt, though you typically must wait one day between attempts. Study materials are available through the Alabama Department of Public Safety website, including sample tests and the Alabama Driver's Manual.

The vision screening checks your eyesight using equipment at the licensing office. You must achieve at least 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without glasses or contact lenses. If you normally wear corrective lenses, wear them during the vision test. Your license will carry a restriction code if you require corrective lenses, meaning you must wear them whenever you drive. Some people fail the vision test due to conditions like cataracts or macular degeneration—in these cases, you may visit an eye care professional and return with a vision correction letter.

The practical driving test takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes. An examiner rides with you and observes your ability to control the vehicle, follow traffic laws, and respond to road conditions. The examiner scores you on tasks like starting the vehicle, basic vehicle control, turning, lane changes, stopping, and parking. You drive on both residential streets and busier roads. Common reasons people fail the driving test include rolling through stop signs, improper signaling, failing to maintain proper lane position, or being unable to parallel park. If you fail the driving test, you may retake it after waiting at least one day.

Practical takeaway: Schedule your driving test after you have practiced with a licensed driver for at least 50 hours. Practice in various weather and lighting conditions, including nighttime driving. Arrive at your test appointment 10 minutes early, well-rested, and with proper documents.
