Understanding Avis Preferred Membership Basics

The program allows frequent renters to enjoy certain perks and streamlined processes when renting vehicles. This guide provides educational information about how the membership works and what features members commonly receive.

Avis Preferred is structured as a free enrollment program, meaning there are no membership fees to join. The company designed this program to reward customers who rent regularly. Members receive a membership number upon enrollment, which they use when booking rentals or checking in at rental locations.

The membership operates through Avis's reservation system and physical rental locations across the United States and internationally. When members make reservations, they provide their membership number, which links their rental to their account. This connection allows Avis's system to track rental history and apply membership benefits to each transaction.

According to Avis's data, the company operates over 5,600 locations worldwide, with more than 1,000 locations in the United States. Preferred members can use their membership at any participating Avis location. The membership is particularly useful for business travelers and leisure customers who rent multiple times per year.

Understanding the basic structure helps renters decide whether membership aligns with their rental patterns. Customers who rent several times annually may find particular value in the program's features. Casual renters who rent once or twice per year might experience fewer program benefits, though membership remains free to join.

Practical Takeaway: Review your annual car rental frequency. If you rent vehicles at least twice per year, exploring Preferred membership features may be worthwhile since there's no cost to enroll.

Key Benefits of Avis Preferred Membership

Avis Preferred membership includes several commonly offered benefits designed to streamline the rental experience and provide value to frequent renters. These benefits apply to standard rentals and vary depending on rental location, vehicle class, and current promotions.

One primary benefit involves expedited check-in and check-out processes. Preferred members can skip the standard rental counter in many locations and proceed directly to their vehicle. At participating locations, members may use the Avis mobile app or website to complete certain paperwork steps before arrival. This process, sometimes called express rental or quick check-in, reduces time spent at the rental counter from 15-20 minutes to potentially 5-10 minutes.

Members receive discounted rates on vehicle rentals compared to non-member pricing. Avis regularly offers discounted rates through promotional codes and member-exclusive offers. The discount amount varies by location, season, and vehicle type. Typical member discounts range from 5 percent to 25 percent off base rates, though some promotional periods offer higher discounts.

Another benefit involves earning points toward future rentals or rewards. Members accumulate points with each rental transaction. These points can be redeemed for free rental days or upgrades to higher vehicle classes. The points earning structure typically awards points based on rental cost and duration.

Preferred members may receive priority vehicle selection and complimentary vehicle upgrades when available. This benefit means members can sometimes reserve a mid-size sedan but receive an upgrade to a larger SUV at no additional charge, depending on availability at the specific rental location.

Additional benefits may include waived young driver fees at certain locations for members under 25 years old, access to a dedicated customer service line, and late model vehicles that are typically newer than standard rental fleets.

Practical Takeaway: Track the discounts you receive across several rentals. If the combined savings exceed your time investment in managing the membership, the program provides tangible value for your rental patterns.

How to Enroll in Avis Preferred Membership

Enrolling in Avis Preferred membership involves providing basic personal and driver information through Avis's website or at a rental counter. The enrollment process typically requires just a few minutes and doesn't involve fees, credit checks, or background investigations.

Online enrollment begins at Avis's main website. Visitors navigate to the Preferred membership section and enter personal details including first name, last name, email address, phone number, and driver's license information. Avis requires a valid driver's license to create an account. The system verifies the provided information and generates a membership number immediately after completion.

Alternatively, customers can enroll in person at any Avis rental counter during a rental transaction. A rental agent can create the membership account on the spot and add the current rental to the new account. This approach works well for customers who prefer to handle everything during their rental visit.

The enrollment process requests a preferred rental location, typical vehicle class preferences, and contact preferences for promotional offers. Members can update these preferences anytime through their online account portal. Providing accurate information ensures that Avis communicates according to stated preferences and allows the company to tailor its notifications and offers appropriately.

Once enrolled, members receive their membership number immediately. This number appears in email confirmations and can be used right away for future rental reservations. The membership remains active as long as the account exists. Unlike some loyalty programs, Avis Preferred membership doesn't expire after a set period of inactivity, though terms may change based on current company policies.

Members should update their profile information whenever address, phone number, email, or driver's license details change. Keeping information current ensures that rental confirmations arrive properly and that the account remains active and in good standing.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your driver's license information before starting enrollment. Having this information readily available makes the enrollment process take only 2-3 minutes to complete.

Maximizing Points and Rewards Through Strategic Renting

Avis Preferred members earn points with each rental, and strategic approaches can increase the rewards accumulated over time. Understanding how points accrue and redemption options work helps members make informed decisions about their rental choices.

Points typically accrue based on the gross rental cost, meaning the total amount charged before taxes and fees. A $150 rental might earn a different points value than a $200 rental at the same location on the same day. Some promotional periods offer bonus points multipliers, such as double or triple points for specific rental dates or vehicle classes. Members benefit from monitoring these promotional periods and timing rentals when bonus points are available.

Different rental scenarios produce varying points values. A three-day rental accumulates more points than a one-day rental at the same daily rate. A premium vehicle class generates more points than an economy class vehicle. Business rentals, which often last multiple days, tend to accumulate substantial points. Weekend leisure rentals of shorter duration accumulate points more slowly.

Redemption options for accumulated points typically include free rental days, vehicle upgrades, and in some cases, gift cards or travel rewards. A member with 5,000 accumulated points might redeem those points for one free rental day at a mid-size vehicle, or combine points with cash payment for an upgrade to a premium vehicle. Redemption values vary by location and current promotions.

Members can view their current points balance and redemption options through the Avis website or mobile app. This transparency allows members to track progress toward specific rewards. Some members set goals around earning enough points for one free weekend rental annually, while others accumulate points for vehicle upgrades on important trips.

Strategic planning involves considering membership benefits alongside point accumulation. A member planning a major trip might book with Avis to both earn points and receive member discounts, maximizing the total value received. Regular business travelers naturally accumulate points steadily through their rental patterns.

Practical Takeaway: Check the Avis website for current bonus points promotions before booking. Timing rentals to coincide with bonus point periods can increase annual rewards by 20-40 percent without changing rental behavior.

Using the Avis Mobile App and Online Tools

Avis provides digital tools including a mobile app and website portal that extend membership benefits beyond the physical rental counter. These tools allow members to manage reservations, track points, and access rental information from anywhere with internet connectivity.

The Avis mobile app allows members to reserve vehicles, modify existing reservations, and view their membership account details. The app stores membership information securely, so members don't need to memorize their membership number. At rental time, members can display their membership details directly from the app instead of carrying physical documentation.
