Find Hidden Apps on Your Android Phone Guide
Understanding Hidden Apps on Android Devices
Hidden apps are applications installed on your Android phone that don't show up in your app drawer or home screen. These apps remain functional and can run in the background, but they're intentionally concealed from normal view. Android phones offer several built-in methods to hide apps, and many users take advantage of this feature for legitimate reasons—protecting privacy, reducing clutter, or organizing their device.

According to a 2023 survey by Statista, approximately 72% of Android users have at least one hidden app on their device. Some common reasons people hide apps include keeping personal finance apps private, storing sensitive documents in productivity apps, or simply decluttering their home screen. However, hidden apps can also be used maliciously, which is why knowing how to locate them matters.
The distinction between hiding an app and uninstalling it is important. When you hide an app, the software remains on your phone and continues to use storage space and potentially run background processes. The app can still receive notifications and updates from the Google Play Store. Uninstalling removes the app completely. Understanding this difference helps you decide whether a hidden app should remain on your device or be removed entirely.
Android's design allows hiding through multiple pathways: manufacturer settings, Google Play Store features, built-in app management tools, and third-party launchers. Samsung phones, for instance, have a dedicated "Hide Apps" feature in their settings menu. Google Pixel devices use the Google Play Store's "Manage apps and device" section. This variety means the process differs depending on your specific phone model and Android version.
Practical Takeaway: Before searching for hidden apps, note your phone's manufacturer and Android version. Open Settings and check "About Phone" to find your Android version number. This information helps you navigate to the correct menu when looking for hidden applications.
Checking the Google Play Store for Hidden Apps
The Google Play Store maintains a record of every app you've installed on your Android device, whether it's currently visible or hidden. This record exists even if you've removed the app from your home screen or used your phone's hide function. Accessing your Play Store library is one of the most straightforward methods for finding hidden applications.

To view all installed apps through the Google Play Store, open the app and tap your profile icon in the top right corner. Select "Manage apps and device," then choose the "Manage" tab. This screen displays every app currently installed on your phone, organized in a list format. You can scroll through and examine each application. Apps marked with a checkmark are currently installed; those without checkmarks have been uninstalled. The Play Store doesn't visually distinguish between visible and hidden apps in this view, but you can cross-reference what you see here with what appears in your app drawer.
The Play Store library includes system apps, pre-installed manufacturer apps, and apps you've personally installed. This can make the list quite long—some devices show 100+ apps. You can use the search function at the top of the Manage apps screen to look for specific application names. This is particularly useful if you suspect a certain app might be hidden and want to check whether it's installed.
One advantage of this method is that it shows you apps installed under your Google account across multiple devices. If you've owned previous Android phones or tablets, apps from those devices may appear in your library. The Play Store distinguishes between apps installed on your current device and apps that were installed on other devices you owned. This information can be valuable if you're trying to understand what's running on your specific phone.
Practical Takeaway: Spend 10-15 minutes reviewing your complete Play Store library monthly. Look for unfamiliar app names, especially those with vague titles or developer names you don't recognize. Create a simple list of apps you don't remember installing and investigate them further using online searches to determine their purpose.
Using Your Phone's Built-In Settings Menu
Most Android phones include a native settings menu dedicated to app management. This area shows all installed applications regardless of whether they're hidden from your home screen. The exact location varies by manufacturer, but the principle remains consistent across devices. This method bypasses the Google Play Store entirely and works directly within your phone's operating system.

On Samsung devices, navigate to Settings, then Apps (sometimes labeled "Application Manager"). This displays every installed app on your phone in a scrollable list. You can tap each app to view detailed information including storage space used, data consumed, last time accessed, and permissions granted. Samsung's interface includes options to uninstall, disable, or force stop apps. Some versions of Samsung's One UI also include a dedicated "Hide Apps" menu under Settings, where you can see specifically which apps you've hidden using that feature.
For Google Pixel phones, go to Settings, then Apps. This opens a similar list of all installed applications. Pixel devices also allow you to view app details by tapping individual apps. The information displayed includes installation date, app size, and data usage. Pixel phones let you uninstall apps or disable them if they're system apps that can't be completely removed.
Other Android manufacturers like OnePlus, Motorola, and LG follow similar patterns with minor variations in menu naming and layout. The common thread is that Settings contains an Apps or Application Manager section showing your complete installed application list. Taking time to scroll through this list reveals apps you may have forgotten about or those that came pre-installed and hidden from your home screen.
Many pre-installed apps are disabled by default, appearing grayed out in your apps list. These manufacturer apps consume minimal resources when disabled. However, you might also find third-party apps installed that you didn't put there yourself—sometimes called "bloatware." Reviewing these helps you understand what's actually running on your device.
Practical Takeaway: Open your phone's Settings menu and navigate to Apps or Application Manager. Sort the list by installation date if that option is available. Apps installed recently that you don't remember installing deserve closer investigation. Write down any unfamiliar app names and search for them online to learn their purpose and developer.
Checking Disabled and System Apps
Android distinguishes between several app categories: user-installed apps (those you downloaded), system apps (pre-installed by the manufacturer or Google), and disabled apps (apps installed but turned off). Hidden apps can exist in any of these categories. Understanding these distinctions helps you evaluate whether an app is legitimate or concerning.

In your phone's Apps settings menu, look for filter or sorting options. Many Android devices allow you to view only "System apps" or toggle between "All apps," "System apps," and "User apps." System apps include core Android functions like Settings, Phone, Messages, and Camera. Manufacturers also pre-install their own apps—Samsung includes the Samsung Health app, Bixby, and Samsung Notes, for example. Most system apps are legitimate and necessary for your phone to function.
However, some system apps are bloatware: pre-installed apps that serve the manufacturer's interests rather than yours. These might be shopping apps, news aggregators, or games. Many system apps can be disabled but not uninstalled because they're integrated into your phone's operating system. Disabling them prevents them from running without removing them completely.
Disabled apps appear with different visual indicators depending on your phone. Sometimes they're grayed out; sometimes they have a "Disabled" label. Disabled apps use minimal storage and don't run background processes. If you find a concerning app that you don't want on your device, disabling it is an appropriate step if you can't uninstall it completely.
Google Play Services and Google Mobile Services are system apps that Google includes on most Android phones. These apps handle core Google functions like location services, push notifications, and authentication. They're essential for using Google apps like Gmail, Maps, and YouTube. If you see these apps, they're normal and necessary. Similarly, Samsung's "Device Care" or "Security and Privacy" apps are legitimate system utilities.
Practical Takeaway: Filter your apps list to show system apps separately. Familiarize yourself with which system apps came pre-installed on your specific phone model by searching "[Your Phone Model] default apps list" online. Any system apps not on that list that you don't recognize may be third-party apps disguised with system-like names—these warrant further research.
Using Launchers and Alternative App Drawers
Third-party launchers are apps that replace your phone's default home screen and app drawer interface. Popular launchers like Nova Launcher, Microsoft Launcher, and Niagara
